Venmo me $20 is a phrasal template used in tweets in which their authors offer to provide certain services after receiving a $20 transaction over the mobile payment app Venmo. Initially posted as jokes, in early 2019 several users reported receiving requests for the services they offered.
Origin
On December 26th, 2018, Twitter[1] user @Eden_Eats posted a tweet offering to comment "my condolences" on a person's Instagram post for a $20 payment. The tweet gained over 1000 retweets and 7,200 likes within two weeks.
Spread
In the following days, Twitter users posted similar jokes, offering various services in exchange for a Venmo transaction.
On January 2nd, 2019, Twitter[2] user @keanileigh offered a choice of three options available at $20, $10 and $5. The tweet gained over 700 retweets within a week.
On January 5th, @keanileigh[3] posted a photo indicating that several people acquired her services.
On January 8th, @keanileigh told BuzzFeed News[4] that she had received 15 direct messages from people interested in her services, with some of them proceeding to send her money over Venmo.
I wasn’t surprised people were paying me. Women want security and $10 is a small price to pay, and some people just like feet.
In the same article, Twitter users @pumpkiim[5] and @imkrieger[6] claimed that they had also received inquires regarding their joke offers.
