WandaVision Open Door Reveal is an exploitable image macro and video series based on a scene from the American Marvel superhero television series WandaVision. The meme features a scene in which the character Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlett Witch, opens her front door and appears shocked by who is visiting. Online, people replace the visitor with various other characters, jokes and references, creating a series of replacement remixes that capitalize on Maximoff's reaction (similar to Everywhere I Go, I See His Face).

Origin

On February 5th, 2021, the episode "On a Very Special Episode…" of Marvel's WandaVision aired on Disney+. ^[1] In the episode, the character Wanda Maximoff's (portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen) doorbell rings. She answers the door to discover her deceased brother Pietro (portrayed by Evan Peters), leaving her shocked and confused.

In addition to the meme, the episode became a source of discussion over the casting of Pietro. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Aaron Taylor Johnson plays the character Pietro in the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, a Disney and Marvel production. However, on WandaVision, Evan Peters, who played Pietro in several Fox X-Men movies, reprises the role. It is the first appearance of an X-Men character from Fox's series to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.^[2]

Shortly after the episode premiered, some memers began remixing the scene, taking advantage of Olsen's surprised look and the number of cuts in the scene, replacing Pietro with other characters. One of the earliest versions of the meme, posted by YouTuber Hickmeister Films on February 5th, 2021, replaced Pietro with a character from the 2004 Spider-man 2. This Raimiposting variation received more than 28,000 views in less than one week (shown below).

Image exploitables also took a similar approach to meme-ing the scene, breaking the moment into three distinct shots: Wanda approaching the door, Wanda's reaction to the visitor, and the visitor. However, as in the video remix, fans replace Pietro to reference other scenarios, memes and jokes. On February 6th, the Facebook ^[3] Marvel Shieldposting uploaded a version of this, replacing Pietro with Marvel superhero Dr. Strange (shown below, left). The following day, Redditor SIRoA shared a version in the /r/MarvelMemes^[4] subreddit, replacing Pietro with the Peter Parker Pizza Time meme. The post received more than 12,000 (’’967% upvoted) points in less than two days (shown below, right).
