About

Web2 Me Vs. Web3 Me is a viral trend on Twitter in which people post two pictures under the catchphrase, one of themselves during Web2, which is commonly known as the current generation of the internet, and another of themselves in a digital sense, such as an NFT or other type of avatar, representing how they'll look in Web3 or the Metaverse focused online world.

Origin

While discussion on the differences and potential benefits of switching from Web2 to Web3 has been around for years, it wasn't until January 28th, 2022, that this trend started to catch on using the phrase "Web2 Me vs. Web3 Me." The Twitter account adriyoung[1] posted the earliest known example of the trend via a picture of herself and her Companion-In-A-Box NFT (shown below). The tweet received over 528 likes in over two months.

A trend started when Twitter account Cropcircle.eth[2] posted a picture of herself and her CryptoCoven NFT on January 31st, earning 780 likes in four days (shown below).

The following day, the only posts to use the wording of the trend were other CryptoCoven owners, self-perpetuating the meme until other projects started to pick it up the day after. On February 2nd, the Twitter account @nick_cruz[3] posted his picture next to one of a Mycoverse NFT, being the first non CryptoCoven owner to make a post like this, and earning 20 likes in two days (shown below).

Spread

Other NFT projects slowly started to adapt to the trend, with the majority of early posts still being CryptoCoven, and a few Twitter users outright calling for the trend to continue to be pushed and made into a bigger thing in January 2022.[4] Due to its association with the blockchain, there were also plenty who were sincere until the greater majority of people who are anti-blockchain integration started to inundate the trend with their own counterexamples and parodies. This can be seen with the Twitter post by the user[5] @TrevorAron using the Butthurt Dweller meme to reflect his Web2 self (shown below).

The trend took off more notably after actor Kat Dennings made a Twitter post[6] showing her with horns on her head and the CryptoCoven picture that she made her profile pic on January 15th, 2022, simply stating 'oh.' but earning 4,400 likes in two days and pushing the idea to many other crypto projects to follow suit (shown below).
