What If We Kissed In is a cliché phrasal template that suggests a place to "kiss in." The format typically involves the use of blushing emojis and an image of the location.
Origin
The exact origin of the meme is unknown. On September 15th, 2018, Redditor u/h0bbez reposted a deep fried image by an unknown author to the Me_IRL[6] subreddit captioned "What is we kissed in the battle bus" (shown below). The image received 23 points (94% upvoted) within seven months.
Precursor
"What would you do if we kissed" is another cliche catchphrase that started in the manga community. On June 7th, 2015, Twitter user Vshimmer[1] posed the question using an image from "True Love" by Sugiyama Miwako (shown below, left). Similar images were passed around Reddit and Twitter leading to Redditor Inhalethecringe posting a screenshot of a set of desperate texts to the Me_IRL[2] subreddit (shown below, right). The image gained 30 points (92% upvoted) in two years.
Spread
On October 27th, 2018, Twitter user @kissjjh[7] posted a deep fried image with the caption "What If We Kissed In The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 😳😳" (shown below, left). Twitter user @seokT__T[4] posted the same joke attaching a celebrity crush on January 2nd 2019 (shown below, right).
In late March, the format surged on Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. On March 30th, Twitter user @Facesovpain[3] posted a picture of the panopticon with the caption "What would you do If we kissed In the panopticon 🙈🙊🙉❣️" (shown below, left). The tweet gained 98 retweets and 432 likes in two days. On April 1st, Gayingenue posted an image to Tumblr[5] from Dead Poet's Society with the caption "What if we kissed in the dead poet's society classroom" (shown below, right). The post received 266 notes in a day.
