What Is This Place? is an exploitable image macro featuring the character Verne, a turtle from the 2006 DreamWorks computer-animated film Over The Hedge. The meme usually notes how expectations about a place do not line up with the reality of actually being there, but with the expectations only implied, unlike the Expectation vs. Reality format.
Origin
The original clip used in the meme format comes from the film Over The Hedge, which was released on May 19th, 2006. In the scene (shown below), the character Verne walks around a garden with several bushes trimmed into the shapes of animals, statues and other lawn decorations when he utters the line "What is this place?"
The template for the meme was created by prolific meme template creator u/Gasenos for the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit.[1]
The earliest example of the meme was then posted to /r/dankmemes by Reddit user Anurag2199 on July 12th, 2020.[2] The meme received over 90,000 upvotes in six months.
Spread
On August 1st, 2020, Reddit user KaroneBrotherine posted a version of the meme about the anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure to the /r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit.[3] The post received more than 5,000 upvotes over six months (seen below).
Another version of the meme reached the front page of /r/dankmemes two days later, made by Reddit user GrandArcher81.[4] The post received more than 29,000 upvotes in six months (shown below).
