About

What's Wrong With Me? refers to a series of TikTok videos featuring the beginning of Rihanna's 2008 song "Disturbia" that includes the spoken lyrics "What's wrong with me?" to act out one time as a child they thought they were under the influence. Although using the song on TikTok to indicate being impaired by alcohol began in December 2019, videos in which TikTokers reminisced about pretending became popular in late July 2020.

Origin

On December 8th, 2019, TikToker adamshoward posted the first known TikTok video using the lyrics to indicate being drunk (shown below, left). The video gained over 3,800 likes in eight months. On July 26th, 2020, TikToker yuungjefeholmes posted the first public TikTok video using the song to act out a childhood experience of pretending they were drunk (shown below, right). The video garnered over 20,100 likes in a month.

On August 12th, 2020, TikToker maddogtippytoes uploaded an example that caused a resurgence in the trend and received over 156,300 likes in a week (shown below, left). On August 19th, 2020, TikToker cambickley and shm0kahontass uploaded popular iterations of similar experiences during childhood (shown below, right). The video acquired over 800 and 3,000 likes respectively in a day. StayHipp[1] published an article on the trend.
