Origin

The exact origin of the image macro series is unknown. On December 2nd, 2016, the "It's James" Facebook^[1] page posted a "Show Me What You Got" meme featuring the caption "When your dog has something in it's mouth that isn't food" (shown below). Within four years, the post gained over 1,400 reactions and 400 comments.

Spread

On July 20th, 2017, Redditor godelbrot submitted a GIF featuring a violent scene from the game The Last of Us in which the player has their mouth forcibly ripped open by an enemy Bloater with the caption "MRW I see my dog has something in his mouth and I gotta make sure it's all good" (shown below). Prior to being archived, the post gained over 17,300 points (93% upvoted) and 300 comments on /r/shittyreactiongifs.^[2]

On November 1st, Redditor Ripispupis submitted a Recontextualized Porn image macro in which a woman is shown having her mouth forcibly opened with the caption "When your dog has something in its mouth and won't drop it" (shown below). Before being archived, the post gained over 620 points (89% upvoted) and 50 comments on /r/meirl.
