About

White People Be Like / Black People Be Like refers to a viral Vine by user ComedianChris. Starting in late 2018, edits of the video in which behaviors of white and black people were parodied in an absurd manner gained significant popularity on Instagram.

Origin

On May 30th, 2013, Vine user ComedianChris uploaded a sketch in which he parodied behavior of white and black people when lost in the woods.[1] The video gained over 117,200 likes and 1.1 million loops in four years.

Spread

On June 21st, 2013, YouTube channel TheGreatest Vines reuploaded the sketch, with the video gaining over 157,000 views in six years (shown below, left).[2] On July 17th, 2017, YouTuber kmlkmljkl posted the earliest known edit of the video. The edit accumulated over 45,700 views in two years (shown below, left).[3]

The video did not receive any spread until mid-November 2018, when an unknown user posted a version of the meme in which the punchlines were replaced with songs "Robot Rock" by Daft Punk and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens (YouTube reupload shown below).

In the following weeks, multiple Instagram users created their own versions of the meme. For example, on November 16th, 2018, Instagram user broccolipoisoning submitted one of the earliest known edits, with the post receiving over 35,300 views and 6,700 likes in six months (shown below).[4] Other notable early variations of the meme include posts by users fucktheyute[5] and RaeRaeRandy.[6]

The video maintained high popularity on Instagram in the following months, with notable varations of the meme created by Swanton.mp4,[7] vrutha,[8] trap.memer,[9] aidanabouttobedead[10] and other users.

On March 22nd, 2019, YouTube user Lifeples posted a compilation of White People Be Like / Black People Be Like memes.
