White People Don't Say X Anymore refers to an exploitable meme that utilizes a moldy image of Denzel Washington from the 2007 movie American Gangster. The meme originally contained a text overlay that read, "Snakes don't hiss anymore / they call you babe, bro or friend." In 2021, the image was edited to read, "White people don't say hip hip hurray anymore / they say let's go." This text became the snowclone exploitable meme that has grown in popularity since.
Origin
On September 29th, 2014, a meme featuring a still featuring Denzel Washington from the movie American Gangster was posted to Imgur,[1] with a text overlay that read, "Snakes don't hiss anymore / they call you babe, bro or friend. (seen below). The meme was subsequently reposted to Twitter and Instagram by several users in the following years.[2][3]
On May 21st, 2021, Instagram[4] page @sssnark posted an edit of the previous image, changing it to read, "White people don't say hip hip hurray anymore / They say let's go." The post gathered over 140 likes in over a year (seen below). The meme was reposted by other meme pages in subsequent weeks.[5][6]
Spread
On July 15th, 2021, Instagram[7] page @meeteintranspecos posted another version of the meme, now reading "White people don't say hip hip hurray anymore / They say based and redpilled." The post gathered over 500 likes in over a year (seen below, left). On June 19th, 2022, Instagram[8] page @wetbrainupdates posted a version of the meme that read, "White people don't say hip hip hurray anymore, they say THAT's retarded (ina good way)." The post gathered over 800 likes in nearly five months (seen below, right).
On October 27th, Instagram[9] page @type.green posted a version of the meme that read, "White people don't say awesome sauce anymore, they say Kino." The post gathered over 400 likes in two weeks and was reposted on Twitter and Instagram (seen below, left).[10][11] On October 29th, Instagram[12] page @maslows_hierarchy_of_memes posted a meme that read, "White people don't say awesome sauce anymore, they say kafkaseque." The post gathered over 1,000 likes in two weeks, and was reposted to Twitter[13] by @bozobubby on November 4th, where it gathered over 14,000 likes in a week (seen below, right).
