About
Why's The Writing Good?, also written as W-why's The Writing Good???, refers to a reaction image showing a still frame from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film The Avengers depicting Tony Stark / Iron Man (played by actor Robert Downey Jr.) with a surprised-looking facial expression and text reading the aforementioned catchphrase. The picture became a reaction image and exploitable image macro meme on Reddit in April 2023 and later in 2024 on Twitter / X, often used to praise a show, movie or anime for its unexpectedly good writing.
Origin
On April 29th, 2023, Redditor[1] u/Agushera04 posted a webcomic to the /r/196 subreddit titled "When an anime fan tries to watch Marvel." The post amassed more than 4,400 upvotes and 270 comments in two years (censored version seen below).
Spread
The "W-why's the writing good???" image gained popularity on Reddit and X as a reaction meme among fandoms in the following years, either complimenting a show's good writing or ironically praising a show the poster didn't expect to be well written.
