On May 24th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @tamsully12 posted, "WITHOUT GOOGLING Name a famous historic battle," garnering over 24,000 likes, 99,700 quote-retweets and 1.3 billion views in a month (shown below). The post became the subject of quote-retweets over the following weeks as users responded with images interpreting the phrase "famous historic battle" loosely, often posting comedic images of rivalries or battles.[2]

The trend became notably popularized throughout June 2023, inspiring numerous viral examples. On June 4th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @Nick__Nation posted an image of YouTuber GloZell Green next to an image of cinnamon, referencing her viral cinnamon challenge video,[4] garnering over 245,000 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). The meme was reposted by Instagram[5] user 1223334444.4444333221 on June 5th, garnering over 323,000 likes. On June 10th, Twitter[6] user @BleuCapone posted a version about console wars that gained over 28,700 likes in a week (shown below, right).
On June 13th, Black America Web[7] published a collection of examples of the meme. On June 15th, Twitter[8] user @808break posted a version joking about Nick Cannon's many kids, garnering over 33,000 likes in a week (shown below). The meme was reposted by Instagram[9] user memezar on June 17th, garnering over 203,000 likes in three days.
That day, Business Insider[10] published an article about some Twitter[11] users doubting that the viral tweet by @tamsully12 that started the trend gained 1 billion impressions.
