Would You Rather Get $1,000,000 Right Now refers to a snowclone that grew popular on Twitter in June of 2021 parodying a tweet from a person that argued they would rather take $50 a month over $1 million right now. The tweet, intended to argue in favor of "passive income," was parodied in numerous ways as people rewrote the tweet with humorous options.

Origin

On June 15th, 2021, Twitter user @profitwithant^[1] tweeted, "Would you rather get paid $1,000,000 right now or $50 every month for the rest of your life? I’ll take Option B. That’s what passive income is. Find a way to make passive income, it’ll change your life." The tweet was ratio'd, gaining over 8,400 quote-tweets next to 2,400 likes (shown below).

@profitwithant later acknowledged that they'd made a typo^[2] and did not mean to type $50 a month, as it would take someone 1,666 years to make $1 million at $50 a month.

Spread

The tweet spread through Twitter as people mocked the question. User @badabacus^[3] tweeted, "beginning to think that hashtag grind hashtag hustle twitter might not be giving the best personal finance advice" (shown below, left). Others made jokes by turning the tweet into a snowclone presenting two very different financial choices. For example, user @drakegatsby^[4] joked, "Would you rather get paid $1,000,000 right now or pay somebody $10 a day to wake you up by punching you in the face? I’ll take Option B. It keeps you motivated to go out and EARN. That’s the hustler mentality," gaining over 400 retweets and 6,000 likes (shown below, right).

Other posts created outlandish scenarios for option B. For example, user @ursa_demented^[7] tweeted, "Would you rather get paid $1,000,000 right now or have a family of crows befriend you and sometimes give you small trinkets for the rest of your/their lives?", gaining over 50 retweets and 800 likes (shown below, left). While the snowclone spread, users noticed that a reply to the original post by @sweatystartup^[5] seemed to sincerely pick the $50 per month option (shown below, right). He later clarified the post was a joke after many users mocked it.^[6]
