Origin

On September 2nd, 2018, The Boyboy West Coast uploaded a video of himself lip-singing to his song on his Instagram account (shown below).



Spread

On October 5th, 2018, Twitter account @foosgonewild posted BoyBoy West Coast's video tweeting "RATE HIS FLOW 1-69" (shown below). The post gained 760 retweets and 2,200 likes in five months.




On December 24, 2018, Twitter user @252a3d[2] tweeted, "sunglasses = the battery to recharge , and who knows what else" accompanying pictures of BoyBoy West Coast with his glasses hanging one his face. (shown below).

In early January 2019, YouTubers took notice of the song after it was uploaded to YouTube and began parodying it. On January 5th, YouTuber Bryan Brandonship uploaded an a "Bane Edition" of the clip (shown below). The video gained 17,900 views and 1,000 likes in a month.



On January 11th, Twitter user @ex3junya noticed the instrumental for the snippet on YouTube (shown below). The tweet gained 130 retweets and 880 likes in two months.




On the same day, @CFGSTA uploaded the first High Quality Snippet to Twitter (shown below). The tweet gained 160 retweets and 630 likes in two months.




On February 11th, Instagram user lilfatherfigure edited the Will Smith's Genie clip to include the song and BoyBoy West Coat into the scene. The video gained 315,000 views in a week (shown below).



The following day, more Instagram users began using the original video in instagram edits. Juhmall.veg edited the video into a Shrek scene. (shown below). The video gained 88,000 views in a week.



On February 14th, YouTuber AJZtheSavage uploaded a video using lyrics of the song to pick up girls in the fast food drive-thru (shown below). The video gained 3,635 views and 237 likes in a week.



On February 15th, soon after joinging Twitter @BoyBoyWestCoast [1] tweeted a video of himself lip-singing to the second verse of the "You Was at the Club" song (shown below). The tweet gained 2,200 retweets and 6,600 likes in a week.





TikTok Parodies

In Late February, TikTok user @yeetonmyplease uploaded a sound clip of the song which was used in over 5,500 videos in a month. His own rendition featured himself dancing to the son (shown below). The video gained 19,000 likes and 1,500 shares in a month.

TikTok users began using the song to transform into BoyBoy West Coast. They will usually paint on facial hair, and wear a chain and sunglasses on their forehead while holding a white cup (shown below).

On March 6th, YouTube ThonkToks uploaded a compilation featuring a few You Was at the Club parodies (shown below, left). The video gained over 10,800 views in five days. On March 8th, YouTuber Really Got It uploaded a full compilation (shown below, right). The video accumulated 12,400 views in three days (shown below, right).



Boyboy West Coast Genius Appearance

On March 27th, 2019, Genius YouTube channel posted a "Verified" episode featuring Boyboy West Coast. In the episode, the rapper, dressed in a bulletproof vest, explained the meaning behind the lyrics of his song and commented on its success as an internet meme. The video accumulated over 1.4 million views in one day.[3]



It was originally some girl that I liked. She was the inspiration behind it. If you hear the lyrics, it's really just I'm writing down how I'm feeling. I was really talking about a girl that I saw at a club, it was a real story.

On the same day, Instagram user raeraerandy uploaded the "Bottoms Up" video synchronized with audio of Boyboy West Coast performing the song in the "Verified" episode.[4]
