About

Your Favorite Student refers to an autobiographical comic published by artist Erin Basca (@rubodubo) on X / Twitter in early July 2024. The comic tells Basca's personal story of getting groomed by a professor at her university, with Basca eventually coming to a realization of what has been happening and reporting the professor. In early July 2024, the opening panel of the comic, depicting portraits of Basca and her professor and captioned "Your Favorite Student," achieved virality as an exploitable meme format amid the wave of trauma dump comics on X.

Origin

On July 1st, 2024, X[1] user @rubodubo (artist Erin Basca) posted an autobiographical comic titled "Your Favorite Student." The opening panel of the comic depicts the portraits of Basca and her professor in a style reminiscent of The Muppets. The 20-panel comic relays a story of Basca bonding with a professor at her university over art, only for the professor to take advantage of the relationship with his student and cross the line by getting personal, such as venting to her about his wife, making sexual jokes and showing unreciprocated signs of affection.

The last part of the comic shows Basca filing a sexual harassment report against the professor and breaking away from the relationship. The opening post of the thread (shown below, left; panels shown below, center and right) received over 30,000 reposts and 276,000 likes in two days.

After years and years of doing art by myself, suddenly I wasn't alone. It meant a lot to me.
દુ But you kept crossing the line. More, and more, and more. Getting personal with me. Venting to me about your wife, your parents, your regrets. Your growing affection. The sexual jokes you kept making.

Spread

Similar to recent autobiographical trauma dumping comics such as I Might Go Homeless? and I Forgot You Were a Man, "Your Favorite Student" became a subject of various memes shortly after it was shared online. Most notably, the opening panel of the comic gained popularity as an exploitable, with users replacing the portraits and editing the title.

For example, on July 1st, 2024, X[2] user @BellowTheMenace posted a Skibidi Toilet edit that received over 110 reposts and 1,600 likes in two days (shown below, left). On July 2nd, X[3] user @DimitriMonroeZ posted a Blue Archive edit that garnered over 200 reposts and 2,200 likes in one day (shown below, right).

Personally i think the reason people might have found this unintentionally amusing is the art style, something as serious and disgusting as sexual harassment and grooming probably should have gone with more realistic artwork to get across how horrible and dangerous a situation like this is, that it's a serious topic not to be taken lightly. But because the character designs look straight out of a Laika movie, it doesn't come off as a comic about such a serious topic at a glance, the university student looks like a 12 year old girl and the professor looks like the eccentric old kook who warns her out of nowhere about the supernatural evil she'll have to face.

It's the same reason that old drug PSA from the 80's and 90's became so infamous and unintentionally funny, it's obvious the people behind those PSAs obviously came from a good place with noble intentions to warn kids from dangerous drugs, but because they did stuff like an inherently silly character like Pee-Wee Herman warning you about crack, it kinda ruins the mood and makes it accidentally humorous.

Still, I hope the artist behind this can overcome this and ignore the assholes making fun of it. I wish her the best of luck in the future.

if you put your art online there's a high chance people are going to turn it into a meme if they notice it at all. see again: this is the society that uses 9/11 as a punchline. If you think your sexual trauma is a more "sacred" topic than three thousand people choking in smoke and burning to death, that's great. But while there are some people who just use shock value in order to be dicks, a lot of "dark humor" people use it as a coping mechanism.

Mel Brooks talks about this when asked how he could make light of the nazis and the holocaust and he pointed out that one of the only things you can really do when confronted with something truly evil and horrific is to laugh at it. You disarm it of some of its power that way by treating it like a joke. Gallows humor. And this is just me, I suppose, but in today's society full of "male feminists" who quite often turn out to be rapists themselves- I'm weirdly more comfortable seeing people turn this into a meme than suddenly acting over-sympathetic and turning into white knights. I don't trust that.

And before anyone tries to play the "You wouldn't joke about this if it happened to you!" card, which is an asinine thing to say because people react to trauma in different ways: I have also been sexually victimized by two nurses in a psych ward shower. I'm not entitled to any of your empathy, but don't make the mistake of assuming that I'm just talking out of my ass on a subject I know nothing about.
