Donald Trump has been sent a target letter by Special Counsel Jack Smith informing him that he is a target in the Justice Department's investigation into the events of the January 6th U.S. Capitol attack. As stated earlier this morning by Trump in a Truth Social post and echoed by the media, such a move usually precedes an indictment.

If indicted, it would be Trump's third arrest this year, following arrests related to the Stormy Daniels hush money case and his mishandling of classified documents.

As Special Counsel Jack Smith has not commented on the target letter at the time of writing, it is unknown when Trump will appear before a court, though Trump stated it could be in "four very short days," meaning it may happen this week. It is unclear what evidence the Special Counsel specifically has to bring to the court against Trump, whether it's related to the January 6th riot or Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the election.

Interestingly, Rudy Giuliani has not been sent a target letter by the probe and his lawyers say he is not expected to be charged, despite his alleged role in his effort to help overturn the election for Trump. Giuliani has reportedly already spoken with the Special Counsel and the lack of charges against the former NYC mayor have some suspecting he may have flipped against Trump.

Jack Smith is also in charge of the Classified Documents case, though the timetable for that trial is unknown. Trump likely faces another potential indictment in Georgia, related to his urging Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find more votes" for Trump in order to overturn the state narrowly going for Joe Biden in the 2020 Election.

The news set off a wave of memes from social media, as many left-leaning users expressed joy that Trump may finally face consequences for his public efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Despite the wave of indictments, Trump is still leading in the Republican Primary for 2024.
