There are many ways to interpret this image. Probably the way it was designed was to give a sense of hypocrisy as to the level of interest the western world allocates to a given tragedy. However, imo, that view is superficial and demeaning. It is suppose to invoke guilt where no guilt should be invoked.

Let's face the facts, folks, the Western World has gone through some horrific shit in the last 100 years; two world wars that essentially obliterated the Western empires, had to go through another 60 years of cold-war fear and politicking, and at the end of the day, in 2016, we've created a western world that has shed a lot of the horrific things of it's past. The fact is, a terrorist attack on religious grounds in Butt-Fök, Norway is a rare occurrence. The fact is, most Western countries are stable, relatively safe, and do not have major native radicalism.

But a good chunk of the world still does. It deals with these affects on a daily basis. Some more than others! So there is a level of expectation that shit there is just business as usual. Does it make those incidents any less tragic? No. But people have a hard time connecting with a tragic event when it happens so often, in a region that is expected for this shit to happen.

This map is designed to instill guilt, and force empathy. And I think that's disingenuous.
