I think the biggest change is that the Internet has gotten somewhat more critical. In 2008, people could post crappy AMVs on Youtube and show off their Sonic OCs on Deviantart, and no one would bat an eye. But now, there are entire Youtube channels dedicated to searching and making fun of that stuff.
That can be good, because people can learn from their mistakes and improve as a writer/artist, but at the same time it's really hard to just do what you want to do without someone complaining about politics or fandoms or something.
