Going by the most plausible and consistent information available, the two African-American men were told that they cannot use the restrooms since company policy in that place reserves it for customers. Yet they refused to buy anything and furthermore ignored repeated requests to leave the premises, despite being informed about the possible consequences. So the police were called, who asked them three times to leave, and they still refused, at which point they were arrested.

The manager of the place left his job in a "mutual decision"; the CEO of Starbucks eagerly tries to placate the outraged mob and wants to personally apologize to the two men; the Mayor is asking for additional "implicit bias training". Starbucks agrees, so on 29 May 2018 it closes over 8,000 US stores to provide diversity training for almost 175,000 employees. It remains to be seen whether this will pacify its raging customer base, or whether it will on the contrary intensify the feelings of entitlement and furious demands.
