About

Did He Just Walk Up Slowly And Down Smash? is a catchphrase among the Super Smash Brothers community after a legendary play made by professional Melee player Mang0 in which he mixed up his opponent, Hax, by foregoing a complicated approach to win an opening and merely walked towards him and hit a powerful down-smash attack to take Hax's stock, to which the commentator cried, "Did he just walk up slowly and down smash?" in disbelief. The line became a common catchphrase in the Smash community for when a player mixes up their opponent by doing something extremely simple.

Origin

On October 5th, 2014, VGBootCamp uploaded the Winners Quarters set from Big House 4 between Mang0 and Hax.[1] In Game 2, with Mang0 playing Captain Falcon and Hax playing Fox, Mang0 was able to take Hax's second stock by foregoing a complicated approach and simply walking towards Hax and hitting a powerful down-smash attack (shown below, left). In disbelief, the commentator cried, "Yo did he just walk up slowly and down-smash?" On August 11th, 2015, the account uploaded the clip, gaining over 4.4 million views in nearly seven years (shown below, right).

Spread

Over the following years, the catchphrase became common in the Smash community, as players recreated the moment and referenced it in similar situations. On April 7th, 2019, GRSmash uploaded a compilation of similar moments, gaining over 247,000 views in three years (shown below, left). On November 30th, 2015, YouTuber Omega Tyrant posted a clip of himself beating another player by slowly walking forward and up smashing, gaining over 62,000 views in six years (shown below, right).

Others made memes of the commentary from the clip. For example, on March 18th, 2019, YouTuber Cael Tridz posted a Mob Psycho 100 meme based on the clip, gaining over 688,000 views in three years (shown below, left). On July 31st, 2020, YouTuber Imperial posted a Xenoblade meme gaining over 1,100 views in two years (shown below, right).
