In case you were holding out: hope, dashed. Speaking to Inside Gamer, Pokemon boss Junichi Masuda re-confirmed that yes, there are no plans to add the National Pokedex into Sword and Shield. Although there were some "maybes" thrown out since the news came back in June at E3, Game Freak is now sticking to their guns and eliminating the prospect altogether. Masuda states: "We now have no plans to make the Pokemon that are missing in the Galar Pokedex in- game available. That is an approach that we want to continue with Pokemon games in the future. Of course, up to now it has not been possible to encounter every Pokemon in every game, so people had to transfer it from old games via Pokemon Bank to the new game, for example."

Only got to speak to him today, and he laughed when he heard about the reasoning. Even if you said it's in a new engine (i.e.: switching from a custom engine to Unity or Unreal) all you would have to do is export the models in a different format. Same with animations Literally a minute or two job for each model. Textures are the harder part, but a dedicated team of 20 or so would be able to finish ~800 models in less than a month depending on the level of quality. Animations haven't changed, so that's again a port job. The only thing that he could understand is game balance, but they aren't changing stats (from what we've seen so far), they're not changing abilities, and at most they're changing learnsets. That's also a short job, from what I understand. I've worked with RPGMaker of all things. It doesn't take long to reassign values to new playable characters. Basically, the only reason this could possibly be having this much trouble is if they moved to Unreal (which I think they did) and they had to rebuild the programming. However, the solution is to delay the game, not push out an unfinished product. For those who would argue it is a finished product, it is unfinished because it has legacy compatibility. To not have legacy compatibility in a product advertised for its ability to play with legacy saves/content is by its very definition unfinished. It would be like Telltale Games releasing Walking Dead Season 2 and saying it uses your previous save file from season 1 to alter story bits throughout the season slightly, but then they change absolutely nothing- not even dialogue -- outside of one interaction in the first episode.

Every franchise can be defined by certain core aspects. Upon altering said core aspects the franchise begins to lose its identity. People are fine more or less with every gimmick or change gamefreak has introduced over the course of series because they generally did not change the core of pokemon. What is the core of pokemon? I believe that what makes pokemon different from every other monster catching series is the connectivity between games of the series. There are no other monster catching games where you are actually capable of moving a creature from a 2004 game (Ruby/Sapphire) all the way to a game that came out in 2017 (USUM). The fact that this is possible to this very day is a testament to the uniqueness of pokemon mainline titles. Now however every single game starting with SS will be a walled garden, incapable of being penetrated by any pokemon not found within its regional dex. Certain pokemon will remain locked behind in the past until the day gamefreak in their infinite greed decides to allow them to return for another game's pokedex. I have no doubts they will use this as a selling gimmick. This "policy" is an attack against the very identity of the franchise. This is not just a hiccup, this is not a spinoff, they have gone out of their way to say that this is what pokemon will be from now on. They are devaluing the series that has for the longest time proven to be above any other monster catching game for the features it provides players with. Now with future pokemon games limited to a selection of specific pokemon instead of the entire library, it is vastly inferior to other games of its genre, be it in terms of graphics, animations, or story.

The year is 2045 Top selling games this year are Call of Duty: Killbox (players take turns spawning inside a kill box and see how many milliseconds they can survive) and Assassin's Creed: Prehistoric (main character is a pterodactyl that swoops down and slices brontosaurus necks with steel edges wings). I hop in my Nintendo VR pod. This drops you into a virtual world typically indistinguishable from the real world - aside from the pterodactyls of course! My friends want me to join them for a round of spawn kills and while I love the thrill of feeling my body riddled with bullets, I have a hankering to play my favorite game Pokemon. Pokemon Scissors 2 and Pokemon Paper 2 are huge improvements over the original paper and scissor games. It's been a while since I played last so I decide to start a new game After a 6 hour intro explaining what a Pokemon is, I'm off on my journey. Professor Oak hands me a Bulbasaur and sends me off on a journey through the Kanto region. Nothing like 7 Kanto region games in a row! My dad tells me when he was a kid he was actually able to choose his starter but in order to make the game easier for today's audience you don't even have to make a choice! The VR world around me is slightly pixelated the Pokemon games don't have the same quality of graphics as most virtual world's, but compared to last months release, the graphics are definitely marginally improved! Luckily the graphics and realism aren't the most important part of a Pokemon adventure. The story and Pokemon I can capture are where the real fun is. Luckily I don't have to walk for real like most games - in order to simplify the game further, they recently removed the map markers indicating where I should walk and they just push my character in the right direction and I'm free to watch the Pokemon around me. Luckily the game starts you off with 25 master balls - the exact number you need to catch the 9 new Pokemon this generation added and the 15 special forms of Pikachu. My favorite is Pikachu wearing a meowth costume. I'm not really sure what a meowth is since he was cut from the dex around 15 years ago but the oversized costume is adorable on Pikachu. Cutting the entire Dex down to 25 Pokemon really allowed the designers to focus on amazing animations for the Pokemon we do get. As I float through the kanto region, Pokemon glide around. My Bulbasaur can't follow me but even better, I can have a slumber party with him and he has a new animation where he blinks twice instead of once. Sometimes he even falls asleep - his eyes don't close but z's float above his head so I know. Ah! My first rival battle. My rival is my mother, and she cheers me on during the whole battle against her unhatched egg. A lot of people found battling actual Pokemon slightly difficult so most battles are against eggs now. Sometimes that feels a little too easy but gym leaders all have one adorable baby Pokemon to go along with their team of eggs. I love wondering what their eggs would hatch into if they were able to have real Pokemon. With such an amazing roster of Pokemon it's almost impossible to guess which Pikachu form might hatch. I managed to beat my mom! Now one of my favorite parts - a 24 hour cut scenes where she walks me through the entire game! She even battled the elite 4 for me! I love Lance's dragon costume Pikachu!

They might as well have just released a sequel to Pokemon Let's Go based on Johto until they made sure the games had all Pokemon and the Pokemon models got improved.
