Persuasion Paragraph English 8 After tragic instances such as the Columbine shooting, people find the need to place blame. This is well justified. If the public was to blame the child shooters or their parents they would have to confront the possibility that their family may not be as perfect as they would wish. Unfortunately for every other teen in America parents are now scrounging around in our favorite past times trying to decipher a problem in our day to day lives that could lead to a mass murder. This kind of thing is unjustified at the least. Their sights have rested upon video games, a subject not widely understood by the average adult. Games like Doom, Goldeneye 007 and Kingpin are looked over. Each of these games is in a low percentile of "violent" games, but violent none the less. The problem though isn't parents thinking these games are bad, the problem is parents overestimating the effect of these games on teens. The two teen shooters of Little Rock did not even own video games. Even exposure at a friends house would be minor, and wouldn't the actual owners of the game have gone nuts sooner. There are definitely other factors at work here. Shooting games and games with violence are fictional, and every normal teen out there understands that. Battle strategy games work on processing and imagination skills. Shooting and fighting games build hand eye coordination, not the urge to shoot a person. This brings me to another topic. Almost every single game out there that is popular and "violent" has no human death. Video game designers do have standards. These games usually have you going after alien races and defending people, not destroying them. Video games are for the imagination, and they are really fun. They don't need to be investigated and banned to settle the fears of parents who know nil on the subject.
