Granted, at first this sounds stupid, but think about it.

The Martians are immune to everything apart from the largest naval guns of the day. They decimated one of the most powerful nations on Earth in a matter of days. They were so scientifically advanced that diseases had become extinct on their home planet.

They were just portrayed as being better at us in everything.

As a completely unrelated side note, if you are having trouble being creative; I'd advise getting a job with night shifts.

It's amazing what ideas you can come up with, when you only sleep a few hours everyday.
