The Communist success of the civil war endeared Mao to the population, which formed the foundation of his cult of personality.
According to people I know who lived in the tail end of Communist China, Mao and his supporters sincerely believed that he can make anything happen, with the civil war being evidence of that logic. It wasn't until absolutely everything was fucked up did those people realize "In retrospect, maybe we should've listened to actual experts instead of a librarian-turned-revolutionary"
