Context:

The Ottoman Interregnum was a civil war caused by an inheritance dispute between Mehmed I, Suleyman, Isa and Musa who were all sons of the late Sultan Bayezid I.

This war almost tore the empire apart, and so Mehmed II, grandson of Mehmed I, implemented an inheritance system which was basically Middle-Eastern Highlander, where there could only be one and it was legal for you just to murder your brothers if it meant maintaining the security and unity of the state.

The largest practice of fratricide was committed by Mehmed III when he had 19 of his brothers and half-brothers murdered and buried alongside their father

This was replaced later by Ahmed I with the much more saner practice of making the oldest son the defacto sultan.

They still kept their sons in cages though.
