That results in a lot of death, and they need to keep the meat grinder back. So they need 30K men a month to just keep up with the losses, and it takes months for the wounded to recover to fight again (if they're not just send back to the front to die). The reported average casualty ratio is 3:1, which is pretty bad. Russians face horrific losses when they're on the offensive, but Ukraine also faces losses when they attack as well so it evens out to 3:1. These guys in the separatist army, the ones with the red armbands, aren't part of the actual Russian army, which is why their equipment is so poor and they drive meme-tier vehicles with Zs painted on them. I'm actually surprised that you noticed him using an old weapon but didn't notice that he's not wearing a helmet or his overall uniform is pretty "retro" and civilian-looking, everything considered.
