Mario has drastically different expressions when climbing up a pole compared to climbing down. When climbing up, Mario is visibly happy. However, when climbing down, his joy suddenly turns to anger.

In Super Mario Odyssey, most poles, trees and other climbable objects are wide enough to obscure Mario's face as he is climbing them. Together with the fact that Mario is almost always seen from behind while climbing, this results in his facial expressions during climbing being very easy to overlook.
