If you want to set yourself apart in this market, you have to do more than that. If you want to truly stand out, truly be unforgettable... send a ransom note. It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold. If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. If they tell me to put them back on, I know conformity reigns in this workplace, and my creativity will suffer. I cannot work there. If they tell me to put one sock and shoe on, I know they value balance and compromise. Only then will I work there.
