One of the big ways GameFreak planned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the games was by making Pokémon Sun and Moon's bottom screen completely customizable, per development documents.

Details on the Scrapped Mini Pokémon Feature meant for Sun & Moon. They would've bestowed players O-Powers, and were originally intended to have been uncatchable unique pokémon before getting reworked into 8 existing mini-Pokémon species.

Z-Moves were known as "Aura Boost" at one point in Gen 7's development. Aura Brace and Aura Prisms was the name of the Z-Ring and Z-Crystals respectively, and instead of Z-Power, energy from the trainers would've been transferred to the mons.

Per internal documents, Pokémon Sun and Moon was intended to be the first pair of Pokémon games with DLC in order to take advantage of being 20th anniversary titles.
