He died a few years ago at 93 and the only time he did was when he and I were spending the day together shortly before he died He said "this is only one that matters because otherwise I wouldnt be here" Be great-grandfather in northern Greece >WW2 breaks out, Italians invade >Join ELAS resistance in 1942, become guerilla fighter with his buddies from the same village >Steal supplies, sabotage trucks, live in the mountains and harass occupiers Eventually cause such fuckery for the Italians that the Germans arrive to handle occupation >Whole new ballgame >lnept useless soldiers replaced with war hardened vets known for brutality >Nazi's proceed to kill the village priest, burn down homes of suspected resistance members and kill two of his buddies within the week >Soon after ELAS ambush is set up to take supply trucks on a mountain road out of the village >Gets captured in the ensuing firefight as Germans repel the ambush >Germans want to make an example of him and fellow resistance members >Tie their hands behind their backs and load them into truck headed into town >Going to be executed in village square >Passing a farm, he says "f--- it" and bails out of the truck at full speed >Makes it to next village, meets up with local ELAS members >Too late to save friends back at the village >Eventually war ends, he meets his wife and comes to Canada and has a successful life >Bitterly hated German's till the day he died
