The people who oppose Gamergate have been making the argument that Gamergate is hurting and destroying the viability of Games as an art form, constraining it to the narrow margins of what gamers themselves enjoy and limiting the possibility of having different styles of game. The opposite is true, though. Those who feel that the kind of criticism that demands obeisance to a certain non-harmful, non-offending medium of art is the exact sort of thing that people dislike regarding post-modern sentiments in other art mediums. When art ceased to provoke a reaction, or offend anyone, it ceases to be art and becomes only material to be consumed. Art is not a safe thing. Art stirs emotions, it riles the spirit and at times it can unseat the deepest of rooted sentiments, unveiling and revealing elements of the self that lay hidden even from ourseves. To defend Video Games as art necessitates that people argue for and defend both the basest as well as the beautiful angels and demons of our nature. To want video games to be art means to accept the venal and the debauched aside the sublime and the transcendent, because art of all kinds is a bisection of the human soul, a cutting through the layers to show the light and dark rippled center of our beings. Art is not merely what pleases and comforts, it is also what disturbs and disquiets. It is both the things that inspire us to be better than animals, and likewise that which reminds us we are little better than. And so, for those that oppose Gamergate, it is instead you that seek to diminish Games into a medium of bland purposelessness. If we were to sit idly and allow your ridicule of game makers to fashion the narrative of what games must be, we should then expect nothing more than merely pleasant ideas that nudge no-one from their comfitted notions. Your form of equality beggars us all to abandon what makes us individually unique, that we might avoid any untoward bruising of either our cushioned and sanitized neo-mundi or the the infrequent abrasions and lacerations of a world with colors and shades. Author has 304 answers and 740.1K answer views. 5y Not that I care that much either way, but it did expose a lot of corrupt game developers and game journalists. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address. I just want honesty from the community, and the lies were mostly exposed by the "dreaded" gamergate. 1.3K views • View upvotes 26
