I'm not saying you're right but I hope you are. I like the idea of our custom unit being the main lord and protagonist rather then an adviser.

It's easier to relate to a main character you control especially a personalized character if they are moving to a previously unknown area or waking up. Because just like it is for them, it's a new day/experience before us starting a new game. Many games, especially RPG's do it. Skyrim, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Persona 3+4, Kingdom Hearts, I think Fallout: New Vegas or 3 did it too, the list goes on.
