Anonymous

added Jan 02, 2009 at 09:46PM UTC

Anonymous is an ad-hoc “group” of internet users who occasionally act in concert, a demonstration of the mass organizing powers of the Internet. It has no formal structure, and survives by feeding on lulz. Also, “Anon” is often used as the third person singular of Anonymous.

4chan is believed to be the primary Anonymous safe-haven, and Anon’s suspected place of birth. Since user registration is never required on 4chan, all users and demonstrators are known simply as “Anonymous.”

Project Chanology was a series of real-live, in person protests organized by Anonymous against the Church of Scientology starting in Jan 2008.

Seriously, I’ve always wished they’d picked something different besides the Guy Fawkes mask, since V for Vendetta (movie) ruined it. Unless they’re referencing the comic book (or was it graphic novel-don’t kill me). The fact remains that, rather unfortunately, the vast majority of meatspace denizens would see this mask and immediately think of the movie. Anon needs a new one. Pool’s Closed suit and afro is fine but would almost always be considered racist, and a blank face is too vague. Vague, eh? Yeah, says the /b/tard, that’s the one.

Chanology was funny at first, but now it just fails. The moralfags ruined it.

Also, it should be noted that Chanology represented a great loss of power for Anonymous. Since then anons have been separated into different categories. Originally, Anonymous was one entity, with no distinguishing traits amongst its members. The separation means Anonymous is no longer able to coordinate such large OL/IRL raids as Chanology. No longer is Anonymous a hive mind. It’s divided into many different, much smaller and therefore less powerful hive minds.
Furthermore, before Chanology, all anons did it for the lulz, now there are too many motives. Moralfags, Epic Fail Guys, and butthurt newfags do it for their own personal reasons and/or beliefs. Raids usually fail due to this. And most raids posted are personal army requests, due to all the butthurt newfags and moralfags. Sad, really.

Just my thoughts, take them for what they are worth.

Shadowfury is smart and right. But Anon, like all internet memes, was pop culture, and couldn’t last forever. Not in it’s strongest form anyway.

It’s always a failure when Anon try to import their inter-power over to real life, like project sovere/i/gnity. It’s even worse when they pretend that people will fear and respect any IRL thing they do. So many oldfags have left. Like Shadowfury said: It’s sad.

Indeed. Now, I’ve only been a part of KYM for (what, 4 months at this time?), but been going to 4chan for some 4ish yers now. Shadowfury and AdmiralFalcon are absolutely right. Anonymous, as a whole, has become a majority of copypasta and newfaggotry over the past year or two. I blame media and the outlet of the names of “4chan” “Anon” “memes” etc. Not blaming anyone who does, no one can control it. But too many newfags think of Anoymous as if it were some kind of club they can be a part of, and think of 4chan as the “playhouse” or some shit. It truly makes me sick. Cancer is infesting /b/ and, despite warnings, countless rickrolls, deaththreats, and even bots attached to specific IP addresses of specific newfags, th cancer keeps growing. Someone has to do something. Maybe M00t could help? I don’t know what he’d do, but does anyone think he has power to do SOMETHING? I mean, being the only admin. has it’s perks, right?

ShadowFurry, I invite you to take a look in the mirror. You are the true cancer of Anonymous, 4chan and the internet in general. You still subscribe to the belief that there was a time when Anonymous just did it for the lulz, the morals have always been there, Hal Turner, Kenny Glenn and Chris Forcand. Anonymous does something because they, as a group, want to. If you don’t want to do chanology, fine you don’t have to. You’re nothing but a hatefag who’s trying to act Anonymous, but you still have yet to grasp what it means. I bid you good day.

There will be a resurgence of this apparently “classic anonymous” you’re all talking about.

Look, as long as there is a place for people to be anonymous, and as long as there is anyone on the planet who will suspend their “what the fuck are you doing” response, there will be a thousand for each. Anonymous will mobilize again, just let them do what they do best: whatever they feel like doing.

In terms of the mask, if it gets a reaction out of anyone, then sure, go for it.
Though I’d suggest something more like the TF2 spy’s head cover… spandex… latex… THING. Except in green. =D

Also I agree with Horatio. When people say “Anon always did it for teh lulz” they forget about Dusty the cat and Hal Turner (even though the calls on the show were filled with lulz, there was a certain moral aspect to the raid as a whole).

Well, you kinda answered your own question there: They do it because they can and they want to. Like you don’t use common grammar on the internet because no one can stop you, and you hated grammar lessons the most (I think)? I mean, I don’t like it when people use bad grammar but does that stop them from doing so?

Anyways, as long as you don’t draw fire specifically, watching Anonymous go at it can be pretty schadenfruedic (is that a word?) and funny.
