/r/bonehurtingjuice Subreddit Drama / Operation Chungus

On November 15th, 2019, moderator team of 600,000 subscriber strong /r/bonehurtingjuice[7] subreddit restricted the community to only allow posts from moderators and approved posters.[8] While no official reason for the action was provided at that time, users on /r/bonehurtingjuice and related subreddits speculated that the moderation team was dissatisfied with the decreasing quality of posts in the community and "bone hurting juice" meme format generally becoming obsolete and made a decision to "kill" the sub.[9][10] In the following days, /r/bonehurtingjuice moderation team and a number of approved users from /r/bonehurtingjuice Discord uploaded shitposts and ironic memes not in vein with the the usual content on the sub.[11][12] Additionally, the CSS of the subreddit was altered to a mess of random images.

On November 16th, 2019, refuge /r/boneachingjuice subreddit was created by doofusllama, gaining over 21,900 members in three days.[13] Additionally, more subreddits such as /r/BoneHurtJuice, /r/subkillingjuice, /r/bonehurting_juice were created, with the smaller subreddits later mergning with /r/boneachingjuice. In that period, /r/boneachingjuice moderator TerrryTerr was removed from the moderation team due to using racial and homophobic slurs on the /r/boneachingjuice Discord.[14][15] On November 17th, a post about the /r/bonehurtingjuice restriction was created in /r/SubredditDrama, gaining over 2,500 upvotes in three days.[20]

On November 18th, 2019, /r/bonehurtingjuice moderation team lifted the previously imposed restrictions. On the same day, a now-deleted moderator account posted an explanation post about the recent events,[16] claiming that Operation Chungus was an attempt to destroy the sub and writing that Redditor Kirbizia, the original founder of /r/bonehurtingjuice who was friends with several of its current moderators, insisted that the sub would be reopened.[17] In the following hours, the explanation was several times reposted to /r/copypasta.[18][19]

when the subreddit was first created, it was basically like r/okbuddyretard, just random stupid memes that made no sense. but over time, us mods slowly made more and more rules, creating a really specific and convoluted definition for what a bonehurtingjuice meme is supposed to be that nobody could agree on, not even us moderators. but we still fruitlessly tried to enforce these vague guidelines, trying to keep the posts "quality", but of course it would never happen because the rules make no sense. it's just so stupid to be a fucking unpaid janitor for this terrible corporate platform and trying to be the ultimate judge of what is Funny when the sub was just supposed to be random shit anyway. so we decided to destroy the subreddit with Operation Chungus.
a few days ago, we restricted the subreddit so only mods and certain users from our discord could join, changed the subreddit style to a mess of random images, and posted a ton of really shitty memes from r/dankmemes and r/pewdiepiesubmissions and google images and stuff like that. the whole thing was a big joke to shit on this website. in a way, it was a return to the very beginning of bhj, where the sub was tiny and it was just really stupid memes. jokes like this aren't really new thing for bhj. we've had shit like this with the racist mario and grinch "hacks". but this was different. those were temporary jokes just for fun. but Operation Chungus was an actual attempt to PERMANENTLY ruin the subreddit.
while operation chungus was happening, a lot of people were obviously upset. but no matter how upset you are, that does not excuse encouraging us to kill ourselves or calling us slurs, or other nasty shit like that. one person even tried (and completely failed) to dox one of us. here is just a small sampling of shit that has been said to us: https://imgur.com/a/XzVbn7T
This doesn't make us want to bring back the subreddit, it makes us want to keep it locked out of spite. Fuck you if you sent shit like this.
But all those people are ultimately just a vocal minority. most of the people who use are subreddit are just disappointed that they can't use this subreddit that they liked. i feel kinda bad, because it's shitty to just take away something harmless that people enjoy just because we personally dislike it. i had a lot of fun with Operation Chungus, but it's run its course, and it's time to reopen the sub. especially because /u/kirbizia, the sub's founder, wants us to do so. the only reason she has just kicked us all off the mod team is because we're her friends. i think it would be really disrespectful to go against what she wants us to do. also the reddit admins are on our ass now, so we don't really have a choice lol.
the mod team is still conflicted on whether or not to keep the subreddit closed forever, so i just said "fuck it" and decided to rip the bandaid off and post this. sorry to the other mods but i really don't give a shit anymore lmao. as for the future of the subreddit, i have no idea what's gonna happen now, but most of us are definitely not gonna be active moderators anymore. for now, just have fun i guess.
