About

GET is an randomly generated event on imageboards when a post’s number ends with a significant number, such as every millionth post, 123456789, 55555555, etc. GET is most popular on 4chan due to the high post traffic which makes deliberately getting GETs more difficult.

Origin

The term GET (in all caps) originated from the Japanese 2ch text boards as 2GET and 1000GET, the first and last possible replies to a thread (similar to FIRST). This concept carried over to imageboard 2chan and later quickly adopted by sister imageboard 4chan, expanding GETs to special numbered posts.

On text boards, 2ch style GETs can still be seen.

Usage

When a special post number nears, users will attempt to mark the milestone post by starting a thread claiming post number GET along with their favorite picture. The difficulty of scoring a GET depends on the board traffic, so boards with higher traffic have more interest in GET.

4chan boards have been coded with an auto-sticky feature and automatically stickies GETs to the first page (although they have since been disabled, probably due to the shortening frequency between GETs).

It is possible for unrelated posts to inadvertently get milestone post numbers. These GETs sometimes can be FAILGETs or WINGETs, depending on the content of the post, and lulz or O SHI- reactions ensue. A FAILGET is a term for a GET that sucks. Conversely, a WINGET is a term for awesome GETs.

GET Games

The high post traffic on 4chan’s /b/ can make post numbers virtually random. This led to the creation of GET game threads. These games usually concern the last one or two digits of a post, where getting a certain digit has the poster or OP do some sort of action (e.g. post ending in 9 tells me what to do). Another variation of this is where the thread contains a list of possible last digits accompanying some sort of action posters have to do. This is also known as “rolling”, as posting in /b/ is as random as rolling die.

Examples of Milestone GETs

/b/ was reset several times due to its first chaotic incarnations. The first GET occurred on April 2004, but does not seem to be recorded.

I have to admit, Blah. Out of all the “GET” submissions:

… yours is naturally the best written article out of them all. gj!

Don’t get me wrong, this is all kinds of awesomeness (and good writing with good examples). But like a LOT of entries here, I’m wondering whether this is really an internet meme or just a 4chan meme. Doesn’t the meme have to be propagated well beyond the boards to count as anything other than a sub-meme?

Just because it’s a meme on the boards doesn’t make it a meme for the REST of the internet. If we got that route, pretty soon all the in-jokes on freakin’ furry boards or whatever will have to be counted as “memes” too, and then this just becomes a repository of the entire internet.

I think it actually started with Super Mario Sunshine, with the whole “Sunshine Get!”

@Pika: The concept of GET applies to all imageboards. 4chan is just the center of the article because that is where it is most popular. And before 4chan, it was on 2ch and 2chan.

Shine Get! was a mistranslation in Super Mario Sunshine. The parrot in Chapter 4 of PM:TTYD also randomly says Shine Get! Shine Get!

Most recent get was 12000000 on /b/. There were some crazy statistics on how many people were posting at once to get the get. I think some 1500 people made posts at once to get this get. m00t can still get the stats if you ask him for it.

Cool stuff that’s done on 4chan isn’t necessarily a meme! A meme has to be spread. The backwater habits of an internet community that only apply to that community aren’t meme’s. Imma let you finish was a meme. Rickrolling was a meme. Weegee is a meme. Hell, socially awkward penguin even though he sticks around 4chan is still a meme because he can still flow over into other communities. Millhouse will never be a meme.

Ahh! 200m GET! I remember it perfectly today!

Of course, I was trying to get it myself, but my computer could not handle the amount of flood material on that page, so I had to wait it out.

Anyways, a Pokemon is definitely better than a furry.
