Pokemon According to my X is an internet meme, mostly posted on Tumblr, in which people ask someone, primarily a parent, to name as many of the various Pokemon as they can, and then post the result. The results are funny due to the fact that most people don’t know the names of all the Pokemon and the names they come up with are funny.
The image originated with a post titled “Pokemon According to my Mom,” posted to various places, the earliest known of which was to Funnyjunk by user servious. This post was not a person asking their mom the names of the Pokemon, but rather a joke on how old people don’t know the names of Pokemon. The post received 154 favorites and 30,000 views, and made the front page.
The same day, a post titled “Pokemon According to my Dad” was posted to Tumblr, inspired by the first one. User captnotatroll interviewed her dad on the names of the Pokemon and posted the results in an image. The image grew very popular on Tumblr, receiving over 25,000 notes.
In imitation of the Tumblr post, many people did similar quizzes on their parents, and posted them to various image sharing sites. Eventually people also began doing them for other fandoms, such as Homestuck. Other amusing variations also sprung up, such as “According to my parrot” and “according to google speech recognition.”
