About
Two Two (トゥートゥー) refers to a series of videos and images showing the Pokémon specie, Xatu (known in Japan as Natio (ネイティオ / Neitio), shouting out his in-game cry that sounds like “Two Two” to most people in Japan, while sometimes zany images and animations show up.
Origin
On November 11, 2006, a “Poké” board at 2channel was posted. The thread was for discussing all about Pokémon. In that thread, they talked about their love for Xatu and his powerful and philosophical look (e.g. his eyes) in particular, while they began creating Two Two’s parody images. On January 3, 2007, a Wiki page was launched to sort parody images and Shift_JIS art (AA) released on that thread.
MAD Videos
On the popular Japanese video-sharing website, Nico Nico Douga (NND), the first Two Two video was uploaded on September 2, 2007. This one on YouTube below was uploaded four days later on September 7, 2007. It is also a parody of another meme, Marisa stole the precious thing:
During the same date the video above was uploaded, a Xatu Thanksgiving (トゥートゥー感謝祭 / Two Two kansyasai) was held to praise Xatu. Over 30 MAD movies were posted at that day. This MAD video (uploaded on YouTube below) was one of them, and it is a Chirumiru Cirno remix (featuring Shuzo Matsuoka):
There are over 200 Two Two MADs uploaded on NND, while YouTube has fewer Two Two MADs. Here are several examples:
