About

"You get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir!" is a memorable quote spoken by the title character in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. Its memorable harshness has spawned numerous remix videos and image macros.

Origin

Towards the end of the film, Charlie and Grandpa Joe approach Wonka, played by Gene Wilder, about a promised lifetime supply of chocolate. Wonka denies him as Joe and Charlie stole Fizzy Lifting Drinks and got his ceiling dirty in a previous scene. Since the release of the film, the quote has been referenced in pop culture for many decades. In May 2001, a shortened version of the quote, "now good day sir," was introduced as a catchphrase of Fez in the popular TV sitcom series That '70s Show.

Spread

On YouTube on, the earliest known video of the quote from the film was uploaded on June 4th, 2008 by user Fayroe.[1] The phrase appeared on Urban Dictionary [9] on October 3rd, 2005, where user Glinda defined it to mean "I've had enough of listening to your drivel. Begone!" The meme began to spread on YTMND, when a YTMND remix of Wonka's quote appeared in 2005.[2] Multiple YTMND remixes were soon made, including "Star Trek",[3] "Judge Wonka,"[4] "WonkaMail,"[5] "You Drink, you drive, YOU LOSE!,"[6] "Ronka,"[7] and "Soniclegaladvice."[8]
