Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Japanese: 葬送のフリーレン) is a Japanese manga series written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. The manga has been serialized by Shogakukan's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday since April 2020, and an anime adaptation produced by Madhouse premiered in September 2023.

Plot

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End follows the story[1] of elven mage Frieren, a former member of the party of adventurers who defeated the Demon King and restored harmony to the world after a ten-year quest. She then started a solo journey in pursuit of magical knowledge. Due to her elven nature granting an extremely long lifespan, the story takes place across a long time, with periodic flashbacks accompanied by the physical and mental development of characters Frieren meets along her path.

History

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End[2] was first published on April 28th, 2020, by Shogakukan's shonen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump. As of October 4th, 2023, eleven volumes have been released. (Vl.1 cover shown below)

2023 Anime Adaptation

On September 9th, 2022, an anime adaptation of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was announced on Anime News Network[3] website. The voice acting cast, staff, studio and release date were revealed on March 7th, 2023, with Keiichirō Saitō directing the anime at Madhouse studio, Tomohiro Suzuki in charge of series scripts, Reiko Nagasawa designing the characters and Evan Call composing the music. A teaser was also uploaded on YouTube[4] on the same day, garnering more than 1.1 million plays in seven months.



The series premiered with a two-hour special on September 29th, 2023, on Nippon TV's Kin'yō Road Show.

Reception

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End had over 10 million copies[5] in circulation by October 2023. The manga also won the 14th Manga Taishō and the New Creator Prize of the 25th annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

Fandom

On April 29th, 2020, the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Wiki[6] was created, garnering over 299 pages over the next three years. The r/Frieren/[7] subreddit was launched on April 21st, 2020, enabling discussions about the manga and anime series.

Since the fantasy manga premiered in April 2020, many fan art inspired by the series has been shared online. For example, on June 11th, 2023, DeviantArt[8] user @ckmlai posted a drawing (shown below, left) based on the main character of the series, Frieren, which amassed more than 454 views and four favorites in five months. On May 23rd, 2021, DeviantArt[9] user @robosquat posted a Frieren fan art (shown below, right) that received roughly 1,900 views and 41 favorites in six months.

The scene comes from episode 12, which premiered in November 2023. It became the subject of memes where the item in Frieren's hand is replaced with something else to alter the context.

In case you're not familiar with the series and are just confused when a critic or someone who's just meming yells "Racist Elf!" allow me to elaborate.

This is a setting where the races that are called Demons actually think and act like DEMONS instead of being misunderstood empathy bait. You know those old folklore stories about monsters that look or talk like humans in order lure people into places where they can be killed easily? The Demons of this setting are that kind of monster taken one step further.

In other words this is a setting where the Always Chaotic Evil race is actually Always Chaotic Evil and therefore acts in a manner incompatible with the other races of the setting, turning the conflict into a legitimate kill or be killed scenario with no possibility of peaceful coexistence.

Because of these things and some of her experiences in her backstory Frieren hates Demons, hence accusations of racism from people who are more used to Demons being misunderstood empathy bait instead of being, you know, actual Demons.

I dig the underlying factor of why demons are "evil" in this setting.

People in recent times have started bristling at any mention of a race being fully evil, which is admirable in a way, but also kind of narrow-minded (cough cough orc debate).
Evil is hard to define, but the common denominator is that evil has to be fundamentally harmful or actively malicious, which fits the demons in Frieren to a T.

These beings are completely incompatable with human life. They kill humans because they want to, or because they felt like it in the moment.
They will kill humans without a shred of malice, to them the killing of a human doesn't mean anything on a moral level.
Even when attempting co-existence they will somehow come to a conclusion that involves mass slaughter of humans.
The only reason most look human is because they are mimic predators, which enables an easier time killing humans.
