What Is The New 'Rayman' Show And Why Is He Eating Sushi Off A Naked Cow? Ubisoft's 'Captain Laserhawk' Explained
Netflix just released a new animated series with Ubisoft, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. The show, which parodies and references various Ubisoft games, is receiving widespread praise online, especially for its depiction of Rayman as a depraved, drug-addicted late night talk show host with a foul mouth and an appetite for violence. Also, there's a scene where he eats sushi off an anthropomorphic cow. Here's what you need to know.
What Is 'Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix'?
Ubisoft first teased Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix back in 2019, describing it as an animated series inspired by the Far Cry 3 spin-off game Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. The series is helmed by Adi Shankar, the showrunner for the successful Castlevania anime on Netflix. Some full trailers for the show released this year, with the show releasing yesterday and quickly taking social media by storm.
The show takes place in a dystopian, alternate-history version of the year 1992, where the U.S. has been renamed "Eden" after the megacorporation that runs it. The series follows a litany of "remixed" Ubisoft characters that either reference or are straight from Ubisoft games as they go on a series of covert operations. The characters include Bullfrog, depicted as an assassin from Asassin's Creed, Jade and Pey'j from Beyond Good and Evil and, of course, Rayman.
Why Is Rayman Eating Sushi Off A Naked Cow And Doing Drugs In 'Captain Laserhawk'?
Rayman's character has been notably remixed in Captain Laserhawk, which ditches his usual goofy demeanor to depict him as an unhinged, depraved coke addict who has been destroyed by fame and fortune. In the series, he's the most famous member of Eden and runs a late night talk show, but money and fame have inflated his ego to the point where he believes he's the "voice of Eden." He also goes by "Ramon" now because, well, why not?
There are a lot of scenes in Captain Laserhawk that might shock Rayman fans. Throughout the series, he shoots guns, swears and acts very uncharacteristic of the Rayman we all know and love. This is shown explicitly in a scene where he eats sushi off of a naked anthropomorphic cow lady with residue under his nose, fully showing us that this is not the Rayman we've come to know from the games.
