The original photo of the dog holding a red apple in its mouth comes from a 2013 post on Imgur, presumably posted by the dog's owner.

The image was quickly reposted to Tumblr a day later by a user named bunnyfood. It's unknown if bunnyfood is the same person who posted it to Imgur initially. Regardless, the Tumblr post received thousands of likes.

The photograph shows an elderly dachshund wearing a blue sweater. The pooch appears to be at an apple orchard in the fall. It's holding an apple in its mouth, presumably picked up from the many scattered around it.

Last year, a Twitter / X user named @brokenbyrds tweeted the Dog With Apple photo and added an intentionally misspelled caption, reading, "This Dock Is Holding an April🍎 in Its Melt."

The tweet largely inspired the popularity of the photo in memes going into 2024. It spawned redraws and viral videos as it spread across social media.

At the end of last month, a TikToker named @artsdd6 shared a video that showed the Dog With Apple photo being manipulated by an AI video system. The system guessed what was happening in the scene. For some reason, it added a man and showed the dog running through the woods.
