You know what Ive noticed. Quite a few of the best fan artist( and my favorites) in this fandom draw a lot of rule 34. Madmax, john joseco, megasweet, and Don-KomandoRR to name a few. Why do you think?

I don't like them for their rule 34 stuff. though I like Ask princess Molestia

EDIT: @opspse
I Know right!

Not that I condone R34 (on the contrary, I abhor it), but why limit your horizons if you're a great artist? Capture all the aspects of the fandom, even the gritty ones.

Then again, they aren't really capturing anything so much as generating it. We wouldn't even have R34 without people to draw it. Hmmm… this requires much pondering.

Also, just like Verbose said, there's something you have to keep in mind: the most talented people are generally hella weird. Did I sum that up correctly, Verbose?

My two cents on what's being discussed:

Talent is talent, no matter how it's applied. An artist's works usually don't influence or affect each other, so the fact that someone really talented like JohnJoseco makes R34 most of the time doesn't faze me at all; his non-R34 stuff is amazing.

And yes, Owens, most talented people are hella weird – think Frank Zappa or Prince or Dalí. And a high five for West Coast slang.

To be honest, I don't care that they do that. It doesn't really bother me. The only "strange" part of the fandom that I enjoy is Grimdark. I love creepy shit and Grimdark. Not quite sure why though. Im a very happy go lucky person, optimistic, friendly, outdoorsy and all that good stuff, so why do I like all that sadistic shit? I don't get It

@ Opspse
I thought Hella was exclusive to us californians, or do all west coaters say that?

There are enough of you in Oregon that it starts to get absorbed into our culture. Like the Thizzelle Dance. I swear, no one who's not from the Bay Area (or Portland) has heard of that.

Also, I think you're the only user that I call almost strictly by one name, even though you've had several. Occasionally, I'll address Ideological by his full user name and not just the mainstay or Shadow by Riyku or Riyku Ku, but you are always Owens. Even when you were Master Owens. Hm.

In other news, I am going through all of the images with the tag "Rarity" on Ponibooru. I've already done it for Pinkie and Twilight, but I've come to find that I like the art for Rarity enough to merit a favorite search of her too. I like Applejack nearly as much and both AJ and Rarity together more than anyone, but we all know that the art for Applejack is scant.

Thank goodness for WhiteDiamonds.

Libby West Coast Commies and their hipster slang are going to be the end of our country…

We need to get back to the Bible!

Don't worry, you're not the first to get confused by my name. Come to think of it, it's sort of been an ongoing problem since the TFC days. I'm not about to change it though.

@Verbose: That takes serious commitment. I would go insane long, long before I reached the end.

I hate grimdark…except when its humanity perpetuating the grimdarkness.

I don't know why. I guess its my inner racist showing or something.

BTW, this was in my twitter stream today.

Damned westcoasters, and your awesome slang…

@dac
For some strange reason, i hate grimdark things, but at the same time like them. I dunno, but that pic for example, I find it cool as hell and creepy as hell (also clever of twilight to disable the horn).
@verbose
Good luck, and remember to bring caffeine.
@Phoneix
HA HA, birdman refrences. But seriously, lolwut?

Indeed, talented people are usually oddballs (did you know Nikola Tesla was fascinated by pigeons?).

Let me elaborate. I like grimdark things like Warhammer 40k but I don’t like grimdark in my cute ponies. :(

Sounds like its the placement of Grimdark into a setting that was never meant for it that annoys you more than the Grimdark itself.

Warhammer = Purposely Grimdark. It exists purely to portray a grimdark world where any grimdark goes.

Ponies = Never intended to be Grimdark in the slightest. Grimdark has to be forced into it.

I'm guessing you like things to be consistent?

Last edited Dec 05, 2011 at 03:03AM EST

walks in and notices most of his friends hate grimdark

Well, I'll be back later…

I'm kidding. In all honesty, I like grimdark and I find it interesting how people manage to fit it in various situations. MLP is not something you'd expect grimdark from and yet many have managed to find a way to fit it in. That fascinates me. Although if I had to make a decision, I'd take my ponies with cute, always with the cute. Thankfully I don't have to choose and can get the best of both worlds.

And now that that's done, I assume I'll be assassinated soon. All I ask is that you guys keep it clean, this is my favorite shirt.

Edit: ^ The grimdark example isn't just for ponies. It's just a prime example.

I'm pretty sure all of us here count as weird. We watch PONIES for crying out loud! And you know what? That's what I like about this forum.

And Bob, If its any consolation. While I don't show a huge interest in Grimdark Ponies. I don't mind it either. Sometimes I find it pretty creative or even funny when people take ponies out of context to such an extreme level.

Pony Zalgo crossovers especially

Collective weirdness is no longer weirdness.

And you all wish you were from the West Coast (except those of you who actually are). You know it's better.

I have a confession to make. I'm not even from the West Coast. I'm from Arizona, and I live on the East Coast now. I just like to say "hella". I'm a friggin' poser.

Shame.

Also, my mom's from Portland.

Sounds like that hippie West Coast speak to me.

Or you're saying that the norms established around the show in the Brony community can not be considered "weird," because we all generally subscribe to them. But it's probably something communist.

And you all wish you were from the West Coast (except those of you who actually are). You know it’s better.

Yeah, yeah. I bet the grass is greener on the other side.

Or at least it would have been if you hadn't smoked it all. All of y'all got your heads up in the clouds. Bet you're as high as a kite as you type.

Yeah, I know all about that "medicinal use of marijuana." We have universities here too! And we just got some of those fancy books to go with them!

Ok.

  1. End war by destroying our enemies.
  2. Bury the dead nearby along with our fallen comrades.
  3. "Encourage" enemy civilians to believe as we believe and to act as we act.
  4. ?
  5. LOVE AND TOLERANCE!

But seriously, it'd be nice. I don't bother to watch the news anymore. I'm terribly uninformed because of it, but I just get depressed about what can't be done, because few countries with power really want an equal peace with other countries.

And with that, I'm going to go crawl up in a corner of the room, wait for daylight to come, and convince myself that I should go to class or something.

Me and Owens used the same macro to express our displeasure with not being from the West Coast.

Like, balls, man…

No real emotional response on my end. I actually feel that way about the world, but the list of stuff was simply in jest. Few things make me feel really emotional, and they're usually things I can control. Peace really would be nice though.

Uh, geez, I'm tired. Simply, the only thing I've let bother me on the thread are minimal responses that aren't on topic. So I'm good. We're good.

I'm running a boardgame called Liftoff! which is a space race type game. I'm also running a homebrew Modern Mercenary Jet Combat RPG online as well….I'm also a mod on a large soccer website….and a writer on a gaming website…and I'm still in college.

I'd love to run a game for you bronies and the rest of the KYM community but… The forums have a shitty interface. They really need BBcode. Formatting Liftoff in textile would be a nightmare. I can't easily transfer my established code from other forums for this :(

Last edited Dec 05, 2011 at 05:12AM EST

If KYM is willing to pay me, I'd install phpBB on this website myself. It doesn't just need BBcode, it needs a more robust system in general. Particularly one that can handle 1000 page long pony threads

Good morning to the western posters about to view this in a few hours, I'm sure its dawn for you soon. I'm still awake and coding away. Bored as hell.

How does one tell when it is time to go to sleep? Well good news, I just found out. Its when you watch this video from the last few pages….

Why Dio Fretz?

Fretz because said pony looks like a rockstar. A critical technique in rock music is the fret. A jazz equivalent is the trill and a techno equivalent is the drop. I simply made it multiplicative and corrupted the s to make it sound cooler.

And Dio in honor of the late Ronny James Dio, a famous rockstar who died of liver cancer recently. And yes, I am one of his fans.

Not a "y".

And anyways, I think we could come up with a better name for him, though. I'm just lazy.

Still doesn't seem right. He looks more like a DJ pony than a rock star in my opinion, though that may be me thinking of Vinyl's shades.
