In seriousness though, I've noticed Rainbow has been given a much more antagonistic personality this season. Something which I can never forgive Merriweather Williams for.
Ever.
Anyways, I find it difficult to judge an episode just by the writers alone. As I've mentioned many a time, I like the episodes where Rainbow is painted to be insecure about losing (see: Fall Weather Friends, Sonic Rainboom). Read It and Weep seems like it's going to be doing this, which is why I'm looking forward to it so much.
…two more weeks until Dashie IT'S NOT FAIR DAMMIT.

Okay, back. I'm relativly detoxed of the bad images. As for the FA, look at the other top entries:
1. FA is second most viewed.
2. ME GUSTA.
3. Problem, other entries?
It all lines up. I leave you with what I give you. Discuss.
And Verbs, epic post is epic.

Okay, writers for Rainbow Dash.

I agree with Cite that Williams has certainly made her more antagonistic. Her other personality traits (laziness, loyalty, competitiveness) are well-established across many writers, so it's fair to say that those are entrenched. In all honesty, I don't see any type of correlation.

I think my favourite writer for her though would have to be Larson, mostly because of what he did in Sonic Rainboom; I really enjoyed seeing beyond her bravado; we got a hint of that in May the Best Pet Win! too, and hopefully much more in the upcoming episode. Overall, I think that, as disagreeable as her character has been made out to be in recent episodes, she's one of the best-developed of the mane six.

I'm going to continue researching everyone else except Fluttershy, and I think we all know why that is.

Part One (apparently I STILL went over the 5,000 character limit…

Lauren Faust
Even though I'm not thrilled with the first two episodes she wrote, I figure that how she wrote the characters in those situations are as she wanted them. It's her concept, and she's not new to cartoons.

Anyway, she writes Dash to be a pretty funny character to watch. And she also has that sense of having talent but not confidence enough since she feels as if she has to prove herself. Maybe that's a desire for respect though. She's also pretty cool. When she flew off after leaving Spike and Twilight in awe, I was like, "That's a pretty cool mare."

Amy Keating Rogers
Another writer who doesn't write Dash to be a character I dislike. Even in Fall Weather Friends, where she had to be over-competitive, I didn't think she was a jerk. She's just a pony that isn't quite confident enough in herself to not try to have to prove herself.

Since she wrote Ticket Master with Lauren Faust, I figure that she may have taken her approach to writing FiM from her. I generally feel they write her to be the same character.

Cindy Morrow
She hasn't written too many episodes, and some of the one's she's written doesn't have much Dash in them (i.e., Owl's Well that Ends Well, Sisterhooves Social, The Show Stoppers, Family Appreciation Day) That leaves Winter-Wrap Up and Griffon the Brush-Off.

Dash was actually a likable character for me in Griffon the Brush-Off. A bit impatient in both episodes but within reason. She could have been written to be a complete meanie to Pinkie in Griffon the Brush-Off, but the only reason why she wasn't hanging out with Pinkie was because Gilda made sure to have Dash all to herself. She's not as entertaining, but she's not a prick. Yet.

Chris Savino
Wrote two episodes. I don't think Rainbow Dash was in The Stare Master, and she didn't play a crucial part in Boast Busters. She was a bit basic of a character. She obviously didn't like being overshadowed and she's obviously overconfident. At the very least, she's funny when she is acting as such.

Meghan McCarthy
I can't see anything particularly consistent about how Dash is written in her episodes. I mean, she is Rainbow Dash. She isn't an entirely different character. But in Dragonshy, she was a jerk throughout. In Call of the Cutie, she was actually…older sibling-like. Something that Lauren didn't see Rainbow Dash as being very good at (of course, being a helpful citizen/tutor/mentor is different from being an older sibling.) In Party of One, she was pretty entertaining to watch, and she was certainly loyal to the ends despite the means. Also, her lack of tact and perceptiveness showed through here.

In Lesson Zero, that perceptiveness went straight out of the window, but that was crucial to the plot. She seemed aloof, which is what I would normally see her being. She's kinda distant from most ponies anyway. To most, she seems to be less of a friend (besides Applejack and Pinkie) and more of a citizen.

Sweet and Elite is where Dash starts her appearance by just questioning things. And she does it throughout the episode when no one else seems to pick up on Rarity's sketchy behavior.

Poor, poor Opal…

Charlotte Fullterton
She wasn't in Baby Cakes much and in Look Before You Sleep at all, but she consistently didn't "get it" in other three episodes. She probably gave Rarity the hardest time in Suited for Success, because she (crashed through her boutique) and wouldn't/couldn't tell her what she wanted objectively (and hardly subjectively) for her gown for the Gala.

She also put Opal up in a tree. Worst pony ever.

Dash had ADHD or something in A Bird in the Hoof. She really couldn't sit still. It was almost Pinkie like. And even though the brief moment towards the climax where she wants to race Twilight and Fluttershy was pretty funny, it didn't really make much sense for Rainbow Dash, no? Maybe she had a weird day or something. I'd say she could have been anxious about seeing the princess, but she was cool in other episodes involving Celestia/Trollestia.

Mitch (M.A.) Larson
Even with fewer episodes than some, dude's written some epic episodes: The episodes with the 2 meaningful occurrences of the Sonic Rainboom, the Discord episodes, the first real appearance of Princess Luna, and ambiguously addressing Rarity's knowledge Spike's crush.

In the two Sonic Rainboom episodes (Sonic Rainboom and The Cutie Mark Chronicles,) Dash is a bit more lovable of a character (you know, like, instead of 3, it'd be, like, a 5 or something.) She actually seemed a little embarrassed about Scootaloo's admiration for her. Also, she was pretty upfront with her emotions in Sonic Rainboom: Ecstasy and anxiety and false bravado (and you had a couple of moments to see through that anyway.)

In Swarm of the Century, she's pretty much exactly as I would expect her to be (also points for continuity in language: "Pinkie Pie, you are so random.") In the Discord episodes, she's pretty bland, I think. Well, she was gone for a large portion of Part 2, but she was just basic Rainbow Dash. She flies around constantly and shoots her mouth off. I'm also pretty sure that Dash has the foulest mouth in Ponyville.

In Luna Eclipsed, she's kinda like A Bird in the Hoof Dash. But a little less chaotic. She didn't make much of an appearance in Spike's most recent episode.

Dave Polsky
wrote for South Park apparently. Explains everything, no? Anywho, Dash wasn't in Feeling Pinkie Keen, but she was more interesting than what I would expect from her. She's loyal to what she believes, she misses some things (asking too much of Spike when he already made plain that he worked plenty for them,) and she's very animated and aggressive.

Dave's episodes feel a little out of place, even though I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Even though I like his writing for Rainbow Dash, I can't say that I think it's actually "Dash." But I'm sure Lauren had final say in that episode, so I guess it was close enough.

Merriweather Williams
I'll give Dash a pass for these episodes. It was crucial for Dash to be painfully arrogant for The Mysterious Mare Do Well, so she had to be Arrogant Dash for the episode to work. Between this and May the Best Pet Win!, my annoyance with Dash became dislike, but I think she was written accurately given the plot.

I give a pass for Hearth's Warming Eve, because of the two approaches I have to assessing the characters' portrayal in it.

1. The characters are acting. They are acting like they are acting, so the writers are writing for the characters as actors instead of charact…

You know what? F*ck it.

2. These are not the characters. Simply, Dash wasn't in the episode much. The leader of the Pegasi is different from Dash, so I have no idea how it should be written or if I like a character that isn't Dash as Dash.

I'd also like to point out that, like most any Pony discussion in this thread, a lot of this is baseless rambling. The show presents Dash to be a fairly consistent character, even when the plot designates her to be something specifically.

For example, I said Dash has the fowlest mouth in Ponyville, yes? (It's in there. Somewhere.)
She says "Horseapples" in Fall Weather Friends, "What the hay" in Applebuck Season, and "I got a message for you too" (>implying that it wasn't anything nice) in the Part 1 of Return of Harmony.

But those were written by two different writers. And I probably missed a couple of other euphemistic instances of profanity from Rainbow Dash in other episodes. Perhaps the writing isn't as cut and dry as "The writer who appears on the credits is the only writer for that episode," and maybe Lauren communicated to the writers directly or indirectly that Dash is pretty much a potty mouth (given that this is Equestria.)

tl;dr: M.A Larson writes the Best Rainbow Dash.

EDIT: I've got more time to think about it, opspe. My classes haven't kicked into high gear, and I probably have half as many as you do, and half as much research. Funny how we had the same conclusion though for the same reason.

@Citation
Like I said (it was well hidden though,) Merriweather should get a pass, because Rainbow Dash had to be painfully arrogant. If she wasn't, then the rest of the ponies wouldn't have bothered to create Mare Do Well. It was a plot-driven characterization of Rainbow Dash.

Same for May the Best Pet Win!

And now the troll downvoted my comment. Oh well, fuck it all.

I shouldn't care; he's just being a coward.

I gotta get to sleep, maybe I won't be zombie tired tomorrow.

No wonder I liked that group of episodes the most. They were all written by the same person who wrote "Luna Eclipsed". M.A. Larson now writes best episodes.

I think most people agree that M.A. Larson writes the best episodes. However, I think there's a little bias there.

If you have a great premise for an episode or you have something unique about that episode that other writers won't have for their episodes, then you have a leg up on those episodes.

M.A. Larson had an an origins story episode in Cutie Mark Chronicles. He had two episodes to write for John de Lancie. No one else had John de Lancie, man. He got to write for the long-awaited Luna. You remember how much a lot of Bronies wanted to see Luna again? M.A. Larson got the first (and so far) the only crack at her.

I'm not saying that the plot is what makes the episodes. And perhaps he could pose the concept for the episodes himself, and other writers have had less popular ideas. But he's had a lot to work with, and other writers have made gems out of episodes that sound like they would suck.

Of course there's bias, Verbs. You know I love Luna to the core. I never knew who wrote all the episodes that I liked the most until now. Then I find out my fav episode is written by the same guy who wrote my other favs. It's not that I only like his other eps because he did "Luna Eclipsed", it's just that all my favs were written by the same guy. I loved them all before I knew they were written by him.

Merriweather Williams writes the best Rainbow Dash.

Admit it RD fans, your favorite pony is arrogant, rude, lazy and full of herself.

Problem RD fans?

I still believe Twilight Sparkle is Best Pony, even though I feel like I really think that Pinkie Pie is Best Pony.

It's like that time in college when I couldn't believe in Christianity anymore, but I wanted to believe just because I felt like crap after my realization.

inb4 Feeling Pinkie Keen comparisons

I'm going to pose the same question for each of the mane six. Like opspe said, Fluttershy is optional, most likely if I'm terribly bored. The next one I take on will likely be Pinkie, because that's who I had in mind when I first considered the question.

And despite your groans with the Dash characterization posts, I have a lot more to say about Pinkie. And Twilight Sparkle. And Rarity. AJ is pretty consistent, but I haven't looked into it much.

Also, reemphasizing that (aside slight plot-based differences in Pinkie and Dash) the characters are generally consistently written. When you see the four to five posts strung together about Pinkie, know that most of it is rambling and that there is a tl;dr at the end of it.

It's funny, because someone thinks I'm exaggerating about the "four" or "five" post thing.

Verbose you did it again. Perfectly well written, useful, on-topic and constructive posts like that are too much for this forum to handle, any more like that could cause the whole thing to implode. You should get back to spammy one-liners before KYM blows a common-sense fuse

Admit it RD fans, your favorite pony is arrogant, rude, lazy and full of herself.

She reminds me of myself when I was younger. All the more reason to like her.

As for Luna being my best pony, it has more to do with what we talked about, Verbose. I feel a certain…………connection with her. I feel the pain of being an outcast. I feel all the feelings that she must have felt during the 1000 year exile. I feel what Nightmare Moon felt: hate, resentment, and a thirst for vengence. I think, if only we were friends, maybe we wouldn't have to feel so alone, because we have someone else who shares the pain, and that can help rid yourself of it. That, my friends, is why she is my favorite pony. That, is why I love her so………………

Pyro, I see my old friend every time I see Twilight written a certain way. And when I go to her page on Facebook. I guess there's that too.

There's nothing wrong with finding similarities to someone in a book or feeling connected to someone in literature. Don't see why the medium should make much difference.

BSoD

Not anytime soon. I have free time, but I will need to do class work at some point.

I have no spammy one-liner, but I do have a new comic that I'd like to share with you all.

It's Jappleack.

With Apple Bloom.

Tagged on Ponibooru as "ambiguously_heartwarming."

You know you want to read it. Read it and d'aww. READ IT AND D'AWW.

So you were an insufferable asshole when you were younger? You're prolly one of the bullies who picked on me during grade school >:[

Anyone else drawing in EQD's newbie drawer thing? I'm drawing in it and was wondering if any of you guys are as well. (My entries are pictures of dinosaurs, much to the mods confusion.)
Also, holy post, verbose! Thats probably as long as all my posts ever!

@phoneix

No, I was the one of the people bullies always picked on because I always acted like an insufferable asshole. Just like RD…only I couldn't fly away to protect myself.

Then again maybe I was a bully, I just didn't know it. I always thought people were assholes to me because that was just how people are, so I became an asshole to everyone else because everyone else was an asshole to me.

Then I matured and realized that it was the other way around: Everyone was an asshole to me because I was an asshole to them. To test the theory I just stopped hating people and left people alone even if they were hating on me. Lo' and behond, it actually worked and school got easier

Anyway that's all behind me now. I like to think that the day I stopped utterly despising everyone around me was the day I grew up

Hey, so I was wondering, what kind of music (or specific artists if you like) do you think the mane 6 would listen to if they were in our world or if there at least existed an Equestrian equivalent that genre/artist?

@Gaze
A.J.: Country.
Twi: Something along the lines of a mix between classical and modern.
Fluttershy: Soothing music of anykind. Calm, spanning any genre.
Dash: Rock. Possibly metal. Anything that screams action or awesomeness.
Rarity: Orchestral. Not any classical pieces, but still instrumental.
Pinkie: Fast paced party tunes. Genres range all across the spectrum.
That's my thoughts. You wouldn't believe how hard this is to type on a phone.

We're talking about music?
I like music!
okay, here's what I think:
A.J ('Cause it's country.)
Twilight (and pretty much anything else by this band for obvious reasons.)
Fluttershy (Probably because of that parody I heard. Does suit her though.)
Rainbow ('Cause it's fast paced and has attitude. Also I hate it.)
Rarity (maybe, that was a tough one. Would have picked something with more harpsichord but I don't really know any harpsichord music. Maybe some bach?)
Pinkie ('Cause of the whole party thing.)

Pretty much the same as Pyro said but with examples.

You do realize that song is about a woman dying and nobody coming to her funeral, right?
lolstaz, what are you trying to say?

Well, hate is a strong word I suppose. I've never been too big on punk but I guess as far as punk goes it's not that bad.

Oh and yea I did know that it was about that… OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE! I LOVE YOU RARITY!
I mainly picked it cause it has a string quartet and a piano which makes it kinda sound fancy.

Lol according to Pinkie that song actually fits, though.

This is a pretty fun topic! I'd like to give it a try for myself.

The thing about some of these is that we really don't know their tastes, since they've never been expressed on the show, so I'll try my hardest to make it work.

AJ, Twi, and Pinkie are spot on. Fluttershy, I really don't know about. She can sing all by herself, so I think her preference would be more new-agey, like birdcalls.

Here's another choice for Rarity (I think it kind of goes along with the whole "Becoming Popular" motif that's accompanied her.)

Rainbow Dash (Also fast paced and with 'tude, but it doesn't make me want to kill myself.)

Here's a few extra!

Applebloom (Perfect fit, IMO)

Sweetie Belle (I tried to think along the lines of "tween girl pop", and I figured this was the best fit.)

Scootaloo (I can imagine her being into Riot Grrrl kind of stuff, but I don't know much about that, so this will do.)

Celestia (I figure intimidating classical music could work. Besides this, Carmina Burana works very well.)

Luna (Intimidating classical music OF THE NIGHT!! Night on Bald Mountain is another good one.)

Discord (By far the most disturbing song I know of. Perfect for this crazy mofo.)

That's all I got! :D

Last edited Jan 25, 2012 at 04:06PM EST

I have a few ideas for Discord.
There's No Such Thing as a Jaggy Snake by Biffy Clyro
This song is all over the place. it's in 5/4 at a lot of points, screaming and generally a weird song.
Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me by Pearl Jam
This song is a really creepy song with recordings from mental patients over it. It woke my friend up once cause he had his iPod on shuffle and he was scared shitless.
Tommy the Cat by Primus
Just 'cause it's really weird and atonal.
Come to think of it tough, I reckon discord would just listen to a crazy mish mash of loads of different genres.

Edit: Just came up with one for Trixie.

Last edited Jan 25, 2012 at 04:44PM EST

Fridge, I love Pink Floyd. That song suits Discord perfectly. I'm still looking for his one right now. As for Pinkie, here's my pick
Also, I'm trying to find a pony for this song. Any suggestions as to which? I got a whole lot of songs I think could fit well with ponies, so if I get a good suggestion, I'll let you guys have more.

Discord. This song is absolutely insane, and throws every rule of music out the window. And it's awesome.

Dude, how did I not think of that? Fits him almost as well as mine.

Funny thing about that album, everything after Schizoid Man is pretty soft and easy.

I'm not familiar with that. Actually, I've never heard of it. Might give it a try.
