I let the Admiral "Sharkbait" (The nickname coming from an old glorious battle that propelled him to the height of the Navy) turn a corner before I slumped in my chair. It's been like this for the past year, ever since our fearless leader took a look at the sideshow of the Algeneb system, he couldn't stop obsessing over the equine sapient species that inhabited "The Delta" as we sailors called it but the Admiral insisted we all call it "Equestria", the native name.
Through a network of ancient observation posts, space based research observation satellites and even the Clarity's internal integrated telescope, the Admiral would watch the ponies for hours on end, delegating nearly every task to someone else so his observations can continue.
It's for this reason that nearly half the Fifth fleet is orbit around Delta instead of docked in the stations of Buraq WHERE WE SHOULD BE! at least Freeport Six had some entertainment to be had, staying on this ship for months at a time was driving me stir-crazy!
Back on the bridge and on my console, I looked over to the captain's seat. Ol' Sharkbait was sitting there, looking at his own console (no doubt creepily stalking some ponies) with a look of almost infantile joy on his face. It was kind of unnerving to see who we thought was one of the baddest motherfuckers in the Dominion Navy be so lax in command and so obsessive over some marshmallows that looked vaguely equine.
Suddenly, he jolted in his seat. I immediately went back to feigning work on my console but that wasn't necessary, real work was on the way.
"HELMSMAN! Keep the ship anchored, orient -15 degrees longitude and -10 degrees latitude!"
The helmsman immediately began the small adjustment and the Admiral walked over to me. "Webber, get the camera pointed at 57 degrees, 29 minutes,24 seconds north 4 degrees 13 minutes 30 seconds west on Equestria."
I felt I had to say something "Sir, with all due respect the planet is called Algeneb Delta and this is not a "camera" it's a very advanced 100 inch reflecting telescope with state of the art Adaptive optics that can filter out atmospheric distortions and…." I stopped talking when I noticed the death glare he was giving me. "Right away, sir"
He leaned on the back of my seat is the image came into view, a very pretty mountain top city was at the co-ordinates. "Center on that palace in the east of the city, closest to the mountain." I did as I was told, I still did not see what had the Admiral in such a fit. He stared for a moment and then pointed at the screen. "Up 10, right 23, center, zoom in 3" I did as I was instructed and was greeted by a sight of a balcony, with two ponies upon it gazing at the night sky.
One was an tall alabaster white unicorn..or pegasus…or both I guess with a flowing rainbowish mane….it was quite pretty to look at…HOW does her mane do that? The second pony was slightly smaller, also a pegasus/unicorn hybrid but dark blue with a flowing dark colored mane…again pretty and again left me wondering how the fuck it does that!
"Okay, sir……what are we looking at?" but I didn't receive a response, the Admiral was wide eyed and almost looked…fearful? "Sir? Is everything alright?"
He hesitated for a moment before speaking, still not breaking his sight from the screen. "The question is not "what are we looking at?", Webber. The question is……what are they looking at?"
I really didn't like it when he spoke in zen riddles. I looked back at the screen, the Blue one was pointing at the night sky, indicating something to the white tall one. "I….don't know, sir? Stargazing I suppose?"
The Admiral shook his head and pointed again to the screen "Look closer….they're looking…at us, midshipman" Now I knew he was out of his mind. I buried the urge to shout "Are you out of your goddamn pony-addled mind?!" and took a respectful tone. "Sir….how is that even possible? We're near past the lunar orbit, nothing can see us with the naked eye and even with telescopes they'd be hard pressed to make out anything."
"I can tell when someone is looking at me Midshipman, it's a sixth sense that comes from being prey and besting the hunter. I know you stare at me for long periods of time on the bridge, probably thinking "what does he see in those ponies?""
He knew? "How did you" I was cut off by a wave of a hand "I didn't, you just confirmed it for me." I cursed under my breath, the Admiral most likely heard me but let it go and pointed again at the screen.
