Voice Acting

claire corlett cuz sweetie cracks

I think you could make a claim for Ashleigh Ball (singing and voicing two characters with uncommon voices/accents), Tara Strong (previous and current exploits, fan interaction beyond other voice actresses), or maybe even Andrea Libman (the voices for Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie aren't too different, but considering the squeaks, gasps, crying, and being f*ckin' Pinkie Pie for any extended period of time, I think she deserves some kudos,) I'd still have to say Tabitha St. Germain by a good bit.

For one, she voices a lot of other characters outside of Rarity, including Nightmare Moon and Granny Smith. The differences between Granny Smith and Rarity/NMM/Luna are very different in Accent, pitch, and energy. Rainbow Dash and Applejack aren't too different, and Fluttershy is a more subdued, more breathy version of Pinkie Pie, in my opinion (not saying it doesn't require a lot of talent to pull off any of those four voices and their acting.)

Second, I think Rarity requires a lot of all-around talent as it is. Pinkie and Fluttershy don't have a particular accent to speak of, and neither does Twilight. Ashleigh Ball has to have a Southwestern accent for Applejack and I'd say that Rainbow Dash has a slight accent beyond having to put a rasp in her voice. Rarity is very dramatic, is very much of a ham, uses all sorts of nervous giggles, hysterics, exasperated groans, whines, and deadpan deliveries. And often times, all of those occur within the same episode while holding a consistent Transatlantic accent. I don't think any one character demands that much, even though Rainbow Dash can be hectic and she seems to require a lot of variability as well.

And third, she's absolutely unconventional in any sense of the word (and it is awesome.) Tara is funny in a crass way and she's very social, it seems. I don't hear much in terms of any of the other voice actresses for the mane six, including Tabitha St. Germain. But the couple of interviews and responses I've read from her on her website and elsewhere are entertaining by themselves. They wouldn't have to be from "Rarity." For me, Twitter can't do Tabitha St. Germain any justice. She needs a paragraph at least.

Or a blog.

Vidya Games

lol wrong thread. But Muffinator is right.

Occasional derails occur, but don't specifically request something off topic. That opens up a lot of matters including locking for being off-topic (if another thread gets derailed too much, I warn, and then I lock it. Also, it sets a precedent for discussing anything, and then people who want to talk about the show or the fandom can't do it, because pony discussion would actually be drowned out by other topics.)

Don't feel like everything must be strictly pony-related, but please don't make it a habit. If you want to ask about ages (speaking of, I'm 24,) add a pony image or respond to another post as well. As long as the general focus is still ponies. A half page shouldn't go by without people knowing for sure what the main topic is.

This is a bit of a brony hangout, but we have other places for that. Apparently, there is a chat on Steam, but I don't know if it's still up or what. We tried a Pony General forum before so we could talk about matters outside of ponies and have image spams, but due to…things…it didn't work out. Also, some users didn't like that idea, because they liked the free-flowing format here, and people saw it as being redundant.

One thing for next season

On the whole, I'd like more of the same. Season 1 was different from Season 2, and like Jayson Thiessen and others hinted at before it began, Season 2 was more enjoyable than Season 1. So if you can make candy-colored ponies even more entertaining, then that's what I'd like to see.

But for an answer that isn't a cop-out, I'd probably ask for episodes/more episodes that:

  • Have a direct bearing on another episode.
    • So what did happen with Rarity and Pinkie on the way back from Dodge?
    • Ticket Master and Suited for Success were obviously prior to Best Night Ever. However, there are only small hints about the order of other episodes. Granted, each episode is meant to be enjoyed by itself, so I'm not asking for an arc or anything. But nods of continuity would be nice.
  • Focus on a particular interaction between characters.
    • Rarity tries to teach Pinkie about being a lady. Hilarity ensues.
    • Fluttershy can't find Angel. Appplejack is nearby and tries to help. Friendship is explored.
    • Twilight and Rainbow Dash start a book club. Blossomforth is involved in some way, because I really like her mane. Suddenly, ceiling alligators! Hilarity ensues.
    • Or, you know, concepts from people that actually know what they're doing.
  • Scootaloo episode.
    • No, Cutie Mark Chronicles doesn't count.
    • Apple Bloom has had a couple of episodes focused mostly on her and focused a lot on her personality and her family.
    • Sweetie Belle has had only one episode, but it was focused so much on her and how she felt. We met her parents, got to know how she feels about Rarity and vice-versa, and we got to know about Apple Bloom's interaction with Applejack.
    • Anything about Scootaloo in that sense would be nice. I find it a bit odd why that hasn't happened yet. I think that M.A. Larson wrote Cutie Mark Chronicles as a way to focus more on Scootaloo, but she was more of a plot device to move things along. The goal of the episode wasn't to flesh Scootaloo out or to get to know about her family or being behind in flying (if she's able to fly effectively at all,) but to show how the mane six got their cutie marks.

It's based on this:

I'm sick of My Little Pony. I'm sick of that kind of show, you know, shows with happy endings. I hate how when Spike is holding the egg and getting ready to crush it, we all know he won't, and we also know he'll escape having the shit kicked out of him by the older dragons. I hate how we all know when Rarity is plummeting to her death that she'll be fine. I'm pissed off that all of us know for a fact that the CMC will all inevitably get their cutie marks, it's not even a question, you just know that episode is coming where they get them and everything is rainbows and lollipops.

Why as a culture do we feel we have to show kids this deluded picture of reality where everything always turns out in the end? So it makes them feel good for a few hours of their stupid kid lives, but then they grow up subconciously thinking that life is a tv show, that it'll all work out in the end, that the odds will ALWAYS miracuously bend for them, the hero of their own personal Saturday morning cartoon. What do you think happens when that grown up kid gets slapped in the face by reality's giant flacid cock?

I want My Little Pony to be altered so that Spike kills the baby phoenix, Rarity plummets and breaks all her legs, and the cutie mark crusaders never find their fucking talents, and they all just have to learn to live with it.

Scootaloo episode. No, Cutie Mark Chronicles doesn’t count. Apple Bloom has had a couple of episodes focused mostly on her and focused a lot on her personality and her family. Sweetie Belle has had only one episode, but it was focused so much on her and how she felt. We met her parents, got to know how she feels about Rarity and vice-versa, and we got to know about Apple Bloom’s interaction with Applejack. Anything about Scootaloo in that sense would be nice. I find it a bit odd why that hasn’t happened yet. I think that M.A. Larson wrote Cutie Mark Chronicles as a way to focus more on Scootaloo, but she was more of a plot device to move things along. The goal of the episode wasn’t to flesh Scootaloo out or to get to know about her family or being behind in flying (if she’s able to fly effectively at all,) but to show how the mane six got their cutie marks.

It goes without saying really, but 3,000,000,000 TIMES THIS!
That was my one real disappointment with Season 2, especially after Sweetie Belle got hers rather early on.
Each time EQD would post a new episode synopsis I'd say, "This'll be the one!" but it never happened!

We know essentially nothing about her from canon!
In some ways, this has made her more interesting as people have been able to fill in the missing bits in fiction and art, but it's a hole that shouldn't exist.
I don't see any possible way that they could forget about her for another season, so I eagerly await her glorious jump to center stage.
(BTW, I never thought of Cutie Mark Chronicles as a Scootaloo episode at all. Literally, the only reason she had so much screen time was to push the dramatic build to Rainbow's story, which was the true crux of the episode.)
A 'Rainbow Dash teaching Scootaloo to fly' story would probably be the pinnacle of amazing, but at this point, I'd take almost anything.
Just give her SOMETHING!

@Fifths
Whoa, there…
Where did that come from?
Yes, MLP has a lot of 'sunshine & rainbow' tinting, but I think that it's far from the idealistic fairy tale you're painting.
Heck, The Last Roundup specifically addressed your point about learning that you can't always win.
If overly positive lessons give kids unrealistically high expectations, flipping to overly negative endings would lead to a bunch of pessimists and self-fulfilling prophecies of failure.

Also, I actually don't think that the CMCs will get their marks anytime soon (or at least I hope thy won't.)
Their whole dynamic is based on wacky adventures in search of their otherwise obvious talents.
Having them finally succeed would likely make them quite a bit less interesting to watch and would immediately negate dozens of great ideas for hijinks that could be turned into great episodes.
From a writing perspective, I think they'll want to keep that well open for a while.

And would really have wanted Spike to crush that egg?
That would have been completely contrary to his character and made him far less likable to me.
If they wanted to take a darker turn, they could have had the bullies destroy the egg after he refused to do it, but I think the end goal was teaming Spike up with PeeWee, so that was out.

Basically, I'm fine with happy endings so long as it's not made too easy.
That way, kids can go out into the world with a positive outlook but without being so deluded as to assume that everything will just fall into their laps.
I think that MLP has been reasonably good at making the characters struggle a bit before succeeding, if they succeed at all (Last Roundup again, or even Best Night Ever).

@Fifths

In reality, the show leaves a lot of room for potential stories that involve those things. That's why in fanfiction, a drama about Screwloose's mental challenges or about Scootaloo never learning to fly actually does sound believable. Lots of things happen in the show that imply quite a bit. There's no need to make the show a great big misery fest--why rob kids of their joy?--but plenty of elements in the show allow for serious questions to be asked. For example, I noticed that after Sisterhooves Social, the relationship between Rarity and Sweetie Belle was never quite the same as it was before. Their arguments removed a bit of the innocence they once had. And Discord's sanity-sapping powers may seem funny to kids, but as for us, we realize the darker implications. Those are just a couple of examples that reveal the depth that can be prodded by the fans.

@DeadParrot

Along those same lines, a part of me hopes Scootaloo will never learn to fly. Derpy's clumsiness can be attributed to her eyesight, which means her eyes can be effectively labeled a handicap. Ergo, physical maladies are canon. If the makers of the show are brave, and Hasbro allows it, a flightless pegasus' struggle to find her place in the world could make for a very interesting episode.

Edit: Reverse Karma trolling is most retarded trolling.

I assume you're trolling here, because your argument is stupid. And if you are, good job, you really sounded mad (but in a trolling sort of way).

Why do you as a person feel like you have to show kids this pessimistic picture of reality where everything always turns wrong in the end? So it makes them feel bad, and then they can learn that nothing ever good comes out of life? That it will never work out in the end, and the odds will ALWAYS disastrously bend against them, the failure of their own little sadfic in the abyss of reality? What do you think happens when that kid grows up on shows that show them nothing but depression and sorrow?

How is Spike killing the baby phoenix reality? Would Spike do that? Would real children do that? Would any person in the world do that? No, that's just your inflated sense of negativity that you try to pass off for realism.

And the Cutie Mark Crusaders never do find their "fucking talents," and probably won't for a good few more seasons. They've had multiple episodes on the fillies trying to get their cutie marks, each time to no avail. How's that for a slap in the face by the figurative genitalia of reality?

Look, My Little Pony isn't meant to be realistic.It teaches children positive moral values and lessons, not the brutal and harrowing truth of reality that you want it to. Children aren't stupid, they know everything won't turn out all rosy and fine like in the show. You do realize children do other stuff besides watch televsion right? They've all experienced success, as well as failure throughout their lives.

Life does a good job at educating children about reality already. No need for television to do that.

Okay, Dan, seriously, go read my story in my profile (You know, i-if you want to…)
You quite literally just described the exact plot (shut up) that I worked with and that drove me to spend four months writing it. =)

I agree that it would be a very brave decision to allow a story like that into canon but I do think it would fit very well with Scoot's established character and be an astoundingly awesome way to introduce a topic not often found in children's TV.
Now Hasbro isn't exactly known for their bravery (thus why I'm not trying to push my story as 'headcanon') but they would gain huge amount of respect from me if they took a leap like that.

@Lantern, below me
I really don't want to look like I'm fishing for views here, but my story covers this, too.
Yes, Fluttershy struggled with flight, but in the end, she can fly, she just doesn't really like to do it. (Spike actually says she's afraid of heights in Party of One)
Having Scootaloo lack all flying abilities would be distinct and powerful, especially considering her adoration of Rainbow Dash.

@Everyone

Everyone seems to have missed the point I was making. Making mlp all realistic and depressing and shit would be terrible from a pure storytelling perspective, I don't expect a 20 minute kid's cartoon to lay down and explain the brutal truth of reality for me, I expect it to distract me from it.

The point I was trying to make and apparently failed to articulate is that I'm depressed and I'm angry that life doesn't work the way it does in fiction. I'm sick of working hard and waiting for everything to turn out the way it's supposed to only to get continually thrown down again and again. I'm angry at myself for being stupid enough to expect it to.

Let's just move on, I was trying to deal with some personal shit on what was clearly an inappropriate forum.

Grrr.

As for Rarity, I was rather surprised at how much I enjoy her character. She's just such an interesting mix of slightly vain drama queen and genuinely kind and decent person.

@Fifths

Hence the "not sure if trolling".

Following up on that though, that's what ideals are for, right? We work toward making the world more like that, if we choose to. Even if it's just in our personal circle of influence, we can have a positive effect.

@Scootaloo flightless discussion:

CEASE THIS HERESY IMMEDIATELY!

Scootaloo is simply late bloomer! She will not only fly but she will fly the faster, higher and more agile than any Pegasus before or after. She will become a legend amongst ponies, her name echoing through the centuries as the ultimate Pegasus that flew. Such is her magnificence that all Pegasi after her will cease to fly and become Earthbound creatures in a vain attempt not to despoil the sky that she has graced.

She will sweep aside that pretender and this pretender and become leader of the Wonderbolts. At that point all the Wonderbolts will resign their positions in order not to hold back her glorious flying, after she passes from this world the Wonderbolts will be disbanded because any display afterwards would not be worthy of the word "Wonder".

So you can stop this silly flightless discussion and give your soul to the true best pony.

I have defended your honour, what would you have me do?

It shall be done oh glorious filly.

So… it's come to this…

Anyway, if I may go on a slight tear for a second, the school of thought that says "They have similar color schemes so they're obviously related" is just dumb and completely unfounded. Diamond Tiara looks nothing like Filthy Rich, the Apple family's color schemes are all over the place, and don't get me started on Pinkie.

Meanwhile, the number of unicorns with a white coat and blue mane would imply that Canterlot is the most inbred city in equestria. In the MLP universe, hair color =/= blood relation.

By the way, this is copy/paste, so that's why your name isn't on there, if you newer dudes were wondering.

@Giga

Fact-checking time! Actually, it was a Roundup, not a drawfriend. Also, the pic that PK posted was originally this one, which is in fact adult Diamond Tiara. Still, they do look kind of related, don't they? Oh, and great job on the featured image!

IS this everyone's age? ….Weird….a lot of you guy's are in your early 20's. O_O

If you've read anything about the Brony subculture, you'd know that most of us are college students. I find your lack of knowledge on this subject quite disturbing.

@Fifths
HAVE AT YOU!

@Family relations (Totally not doing this to justify my off-topic duel with Fifths…)
In a universe where the Cakes can be a genetically-related family, I think we can say that all bets are off.

Family members may or may not have anything in common with each other physically or visually.

Hey guys, finished a new song.

This one's an instrumental piece for piano. Was trying to capture the feeling of a long, feverish sleep riddled with confusion and despair. I need to get to a piano to record a proper version of this, but here's something. I really appreciate feedback :)

The true glory is with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

That second part is really important, could save your life even. You never know seeing the cancer you got from the wrong generation.

Bask your eyes upon the glory that is the correct plot show.

I'm not trying to double post but…i think we've already talked about this somewhere around 5 pages back. Frankly it's starting to annoy me.

So you're into tentacle creepypasta pornography? Weird fetish, but whatever helps you sleep at night.

Try some of H.P. Lovecraft's works. I think The Call of Cthulhu would really fit your tastes.

Wow, I didn't realize we had so many minors in here. I turned 21 in April.
