Just because I--while trying to mostly stay out of other people's business as a country--can't help but stick my nose into other people's business as a player

- Research goes into developing Super-Light materials for the Sky-City program, which could really use a cool name.

I read a fascinating essay by Buckminster Fuller many years ago about the feasibility of building a floating city. While lightweight materials obviously help, he pointed out that the real issue is scale and displacement. Consider that aircraft carriers are huge hunks of metal that act as floating cities on water. If you displace enough volume, a balloon made out of steel will float so long as the combined density of the steel and the air inside it is less than the density of the exterior atmosphere. In fuller's essay, he claimed that a geodesic sphere a mile in diameter would float if the air inside it was just a few degrees warmer than the air surrounding it, and was prevented from escaping from the upper half of the sphere.

Oh, and if you're really looking for a cool name, I'm always of the opinion that big long German words look and sound cool, so maybe something like "Schwimmendenstahlwolkenbedeckungstadt." Whatever you choose, Sagarmatha will be watching with great interest.

@Brucker: Yeah, but then I realized the expense of making a city fly with nothing but volumetric displacement by Lighter Gases would be beyond reasonable calculation, considering any "City" would have significant population, each home or building being upwards of many dozens of tons, resulting in a series of ridiculously large and complicated balloons. Reducing the density of material (normally easy but retaining strength is a must) would raise feasibility so much.

@Brucker

The concept has also fascinated me, and I'm probably going to name the material Promethian, after the titan who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man.

Global News:

- Their revenge against Charlie Brooker ruined, the Moon Folk reveal themselves to be a recently formed entity known as the Sovereign Lunar Nations.
- On a more Meta-Note, I'm thinking of expanding the statistics, especially in regards to Military. Post thoughts and/or suggestions.

Morussania
Syndiquil
Government: Federal Republic
Military: Good
Economy: Good
Tech: Industrial Age ==> Atomic Age

- A large consession of land is made to Angmar on religious (and political) grounds. With significant pull with other Middle Eastern nations, Angmar claims the rest of the Arabic peninsula, and brings many of the Holy Sites back to life.
- Troops are rerouted by and large to the Persia Colony, along with additional fortifications and expanded operations.
- A blockade against Syserror is made in the Red Sea. This is awkward as Syserror attempts the exact same thing against Morussania. Except Morussania has a larger and more experience fleet which pushes Syserror out of the region.
- The Nuclear Project confirms that after seeing Syserror perform a successful bomb test, a weapon of similar maginuted will be available to Morussania by Summer's end.
- Conscription becomes a thing. The large Maritime industry is supported by a growing Multi-Ethnic Legion.
- War with CBR ends, sort of. The Sovereign Lunar Nations are informed, and they are probably planning what to do with this knowledge.

No Man's Land
Weasel
Government: Republic
Military: Average, Scary
Economy: Basic
Tech: Imperial Age ==> Industrial Age

- Subsidies are given to large Farming Businesses to expand operations in the Weast. They do so.
- Emmigration to the Weast reaches an all time high as expanding Infrastructure provides room for the growing farmer communities.

Eggman Empire
Dr. Ivo Robotnik
Government: Monarchy
Military: Great
Economy: Good
Tech: Industrial Age

- Invasions are ceased, but a blockade is established around the Reich. This works for a month before an All-Flags European Navy sends a battered Egg-Fleet home, and moves on unexploited Isles.
- Large sums are given to the Shipyards of The Empire and boats come off the dry docks. The losses above are mostly made up for in this manner.
- Airfields are diminished as the Airforce and navy begin to blend with the addition of new Carriers to the fleet.
- Rockets and more Aircraft guns. Variety is the spice of murder.
- The mechanical computer is developed. It computes, something suprisingly useful to many industries and forces.

Leninland
Crouching Sloth
Government: Socialist Democratic Republic
Military: Average
Economy: Average
Tech: Industrial Age ==> Atomic Age

- War ends. For now.
- New subsidies and an end to war leads to a growth in Leninland's relatively independent economy.
- The Syserror test gives new ideas to RnD. A bomb of Lenin design may be available come Autumn.
- Ready to Rocket and Roll son? The rockets are. Because there are now Rockets in the Lenin Aresenal.
- Summoning otherworldly monsters is possible, so controlling them would be in genre, right? The Bureau investigates this matter.

Königsberg
Vlad
Government: Representative Republic
Military: Amazing, "Sky Navy"
Economy: Good.
Tech: Industrial Diesel Punk Age ==> Atomic Age

- Work on super-light Materials continues under Project "Promethium". It's sad no-one alive gets the reference.
- Attempts at assisting the Commission turn sour, as not only are offers turned down, but the Commission openly expresses bitterness towards Königsberg's massive standing Military.
- The Atomic Program declares it can now produce a weapon comparable to Syserror's. Work still continues on harnessing that energy, however.
- A rocket Program is launched. Literally. It reaches the upper atmosphere before breaking up.

The Sino-Japanese Republic
Fridge Logic
Government: Representative Republic
Military: Average
Economy: Good
Tech: Industrial Age ==> Atomic Age

- Several computer makes are imported and reverse engineered, and Sino RnD now produces functional Vaccuum tube systems.
- An international Commitee, the International Convention Against Atomic and Nuclear Armaments (ICAANA), is launches. No one joins as Sino has little political tug in the Occident, and the Indonesian Pact is closed off.
- A rocket is launched, bearing a computer intended to sit in outer space. Unfortunate that the thing breaks up in the upper atmosphere.

Cattonia
madcat
Government: Socialist Democratic Republic
Military: Good
Economy: Great
Tech: Industrial Age

- War never changes, except when Cattonia introduces a revolutionary weapon and changes it. Movements in Africa continue with success.
- A Union-Vascon attack severly damages the small Pacific Division of the Cattonian Fleet. The Forces on Madagascar, while superior, are cut off from the rest of Cattonia.

Sagarmatha
Brucker
Government: Anarcho-communist People’s Republic
Military: Average
Economy: Average
Tech: Limited Industrial Age

- The consturction of Green Electrical sources in the form of Mills both Wind in Water leads to a unique Lmited Industrial revolution, in that, while Sagarmatha is culturally and socio-economically indisposed to create true industry, is capable of utilizing the technology of the age, to an extent.
- An excommunication program in New Bangladesh is cut short with a resurgence of Indian forces, much larger and better equipped. It is worth noting that Gas Masks and Sealed Rations are common among the new Invaders.

United Pacifica
Serious Business
Government: Elective Chiefdom
Military: Average, Navy Headed
Economy: Good
Tech: Industrial Age

Otak
Sir Crona Orunitia Equire
Government: Democratic Corporate Techno-Oligarchy
Military: Average, Guerrilla Warfare
Economy: Average
Tech: Industrial Age

- The Union is brought back in the position of a Democratic seating of a quasi-parliament with the duties of objectively monitoring and voting on manners the Corporate Oligarchy comes to deal with. Otak has one of the most complicated Governments in the world.
- The Union is also given complete control over the Nation's Criminal Infrastructure.
- A new program emerges to bring Psychic powers as weapon. Since most of the known Psychics exploded last year, recruits are few and far between.
- Large subsidies are given to multiple industries, many of them transportation and medicinal in nature, leading to a higher standard of living and actual urban development.

Syserror
Blue Screen (of Death)
Government: Constitutional Democratic Republic
Military: Good
Economy: Good
Tech: Atomic Age

- The Commission ignores Syserror's pleas as they are banned. An ancient statue of an open hand is unearthed in CBR and is symbolically towards Syserror in Iberia.
- Automatic and ranged rifles enter service with specialty units.
- Battleships are phased out and replaced with cheaper Destroyers, numbers providing the edge from here on out.
- A blockade throughout the Mediterranean is established, and shortly thereafter is pummled by the Morussanian fleet.
- Aggression against the Yemen territory end as it comes under Angmar rule. Attempts to expand are further are cut short by Glorious Angman Soldiers, their glory so glorious it's blinding.
- An expedition to Australia is booted by Vietnam, although less rudely this time.
- A jamming signal is devised and broadcast to the Moon. It succeeds in ruining signals between many nations and is shut down. Soon after, the Singsong Embassy inquires as to Syserror's intent with the Sovereignty.

Last edited Jul 07, 2013 at 11:11PM EDT

The jammer was supposed to be directed at the orbital lasers in geostationary orbit, not the moon itself. Trying to jam the moon would be pretty futile. But I figured the former should be possible. I checked how signal jamming worked in WWII and the Cold War and we had the technology back then

Also I'm ending hostility towards Morussinia. Arabian territory is now effectively locked out and untouchable so that conflict is now officially a humongous waste of time and diplomacy. Way to go Syserror (Slams face with keyboard)

As for expanding Military statistics, I think it would be good to idea to show different scales for naval, air and ground power just as Syndic had it in the previous game

That way I would have known beforehand if my naval power was in any way competent before doing anything drastic.

Start more wars?

Syserror's lack of computer power prevented exacting the orbital locations of the satellites, so the next best was done. I'm not actually sure whether or not that would have worked on the satellites either way.

@Fridge

Is that all you westerners do? Wage war?

It's not like there's any other fun wholesome activities we could try.

An ancient statue of an open hand is unearthed in CBR and is symbolically towards Syserror in Iberia.

Wait…that's DrPeppers statue…

A massive statue of a hand is constructed facing Russia. The Prime Minister advises that the Czar of Russia “talk to it” if he has any more complaints about British foreign policy

@Cale: I'm editing the turn to read "Turn 20" and "India unconditionally surrenders and joins hands with the Sagarmathans for a spontaneous, uplifting round of Kumbaya." That cool?

@Crona: I'm expanding the technology section to include specialties, but I'm not sure what you mean in regards to economy. It's pretty yes/no in that area.

@Brucker: Why this.

@Everyone: I want to ask something before I start on the next turn. Is everyone okay with the supernatural stuff going on. I can see why demons and psychics could be distasteful for some, I'm just the kind of guy to reward the whimsical.

So yeah thoughts on that.

Last edited Jul 08, 2013 at 01:19AM EDT

@Cale:

I don't understand your question towards me (although perhaps you were just joking, as I was about the second part of my post), but your response to Crona intrigues me. I hadn't even noticed that he said "economy", but it seems there is something you could do.

In particular, there's the question of how well-funded the government is, what the standard of living is like for citizens, and what sort of economic disparity exists in the populace of any given country, for example. I know sometimes I wonder what my economic rating means given that Sagarmatha doesn't have an economy that's really at all comparable to much of anything. I'm fine with the simple one-dimensional rating myself, but I can see how there could be questions.

Oh, and I'm totally cool with the supernatural stuff. Though I don't believe in ghosts or whatever in real life, this is a game, so why not? I hope we also eventually have players that develop ridiculous sci-fi technologies (like giant moon lasers, cough cough), because that ought to be cool.

Turn 21

Map

Global News:

-Statistics Updated: Where "Average" once was, it is replaced by xxx. More or fewer stars correspond to a higher or lower level.
-Military is divided into self explanatory Army, Navy, and AirForce. Economy is divided into Reserve, the general economic power a government can use and exhume, Standard, the quality of life for the average citizen (or in regards to the largest class), and Class list, displaying the economic groups and their contribution (Lower, poor to under-provided, Middle, the self sufficient, Economic Elite, merchants/owners of large businesses.)
-Technology and science that is beyond the Industrial Age will now be listed. Some technologies will be removed as you advance through the ages (Such as Radar when one is at least Industrial, or Vacuum Tube Computers when a new variant is introduced), though they will be retained as natural technology of the age.
-Since no-one explicitly said no to supernatural features, it's been included as a science as "magia"

- Contact with the SLN is made a Holy Priority, as the Nation reforms into a more Theocratic state, due in part to swathes of converts to the Quasi-Christian Moon Worship of last year. Vast spaces are cleared for an "emergency line", consisting of large letter cards laid out to spell a message. Hooligans regularly raid these plazas to spell out such high diction as "Penis" and "titties".
- Large amounts of money go towards lavish buildings and additions to aid in Morussania's conversion, including a Steepled Capital Building, now also the world's largest Cathedral.
- A propaganda campaign goes towards converting the civilian populace to the new faith. The lack of a major religion contributes to a growing flock many thousands strong.
- Nuclear Armaments are being produced in bulk, causing a certain level of alarm to many, and leading India to inquire as to purchasing such weapons.
- Space, being the holiest of sites, becomes THE priority with the advent of a Morussanian Space program, which quickly produces a rocket reaching the mesosphere before breaking apart. The SNL says "good try" and "you'll get it someday".
- Friendly gestures are made to the Angmen wherever they are found. Such gestures include high-fives, fist-bumbs, sleep-overs, and the occasional gentle kiss, the pure blooming flower of a quiet romance, whose name is not spoken in words, but in the eyes of star-crossed lovers, as the troubles of a hard world are forgotten in each others embrace.

- Computer Subsidies create a unique commercial desire for the M. Computer, especially among banking and accounting businesses, who benefit with the ability to crunch large numbers faster.
- The Air Force reorganizes and gains the benefit of additional assets, particularly bombing planes.
- The Missile is devised with the aid of computing devices.
- A nuclear program is devised and funded. With a vast amount of information regarding Nuclear Principals floating in the global scientific community, it shouldn't take too long to get results.
- The majority of the fleet and a significant Portion of the Air Force is brought to bear on the recently taken Sax Isle. The meager remains of the CBR fleet hold their ground for a good while, but deal no casualties, and two weeks later the Isle is bombed and reclaimed.
- Unfortunately, this was part of the Commission's war plan. As the Egg-Fleet set out for Europe, The All-Flags made a run across the Atlantic, exploiting a usually well-patrolled gap south of Bermuda. Though the Egg-Fleet suffered almost zero-casualties in this way, The Commission has made a huge land-fall on North America.

- Project Promethium comes to a close with the development of the Kroll Process, allowing the the production of Heavy-Light alloys. One particular alloy is chosen for the Sky City Program, lighter than most and strong than a lot, here on known as Promethium.

- A large amount of riots and uprisings occur in New Bangladesh, in part due to rallying by Nationalists. While Indians prove capable of oppressing and kill-murding Sagarmathans, the tides of recruits coming in to defend the homeland make life all the more difficult for the Blue-Shirts.
- Neo-Buddhists perform their usual duties of trying to prevent violence and propagating limited understanding. This has two effects. The first is that the self-burnings and barb-wire sittings distract Indian troops often enough for Nationalists to make their moves. The second is that many are starting to lose faith in the Temple, seeing the Monks as willing to give up their homeland.
- The Vacuum Tube is devised, further more, the Vacuum Tube Computer is created.
- Chemical weapons of a variety are utilized against Invaders, in any way possible: a punji stick, a dart, a dirigible bomb. The Indians are not getting the short war they had hoped for.

- A challenge to the Sino Rugby team results in an overwhelming victory. The larger built Syserrorians and actual knowledge of what rugby is probably had nothing to do with it.
- Singsong is disappointed with Syserror's choice to disavow further interactions with SLN. They also refuse a commercial Trade route with the Indonesian Pact, citing a need for Syserror, if not the world to be on "Their level".

My concern is that it's a tactical disadvantage to know that much without spying.

You are assuming that each of us don't already have spies in everybody else's nations. Fact of the matter is, we all already do, and as it would be IRL a massive spy network is part of a nation's basic infrastructure and should be taken for granted, so why not just keep the stats open? Realistically the only countries that wouldn't know these things are tiny, isolated nations under siege.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PACIFICAN PRIME MINISTER:

BE IT KNOWN that no acts of aggression, by any nation or military, will be tolerated in Pacifican waters. This includes the areas of the Pacific between Pacifican islands (basically the whole ocean). Any ships equipped for war may only pass with close supervision. Trade ships may pass unhindered.

ALSO, get 1/2 OFF our new summer vacation package, available through 2158, because IT'S ALWAYS SUMMER HERE!

@Serious Business

I'd love to use your services as a vacation resort for me people but I have a problem. Both Singsong and Vietnam have decided that I shall not pass.

Can you put in a good word for me so they will lighten up and stop turning back international sea traffic?;

@Singsong empire

C'mon baby don't be like that. Were both beautiful nations, lets get together and globalize.

Dear Blue Screen (of Death),

Thank you for your interest in our FAMILY FUN PACKAGE. Know that United Pacifica endorses at all times free trade and travel. Sadly, we cannot take a formal stance in disputes between nations. Remember, while Pacifica has a 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE of safety within our controlled waters and resorts, we don't have the power to guarantee this safety when traveling outside of Pacifican territory.

We often worry about those who have no means of traveling to Pacifica, due to geographical or political constraints. Don't give up, though! Feel free to request brochures, and subscribe to Island magazine, (or Treasure Island magazine for the kids!).

Currently, we have a big development project in the works that should be useful in providing transportation to Pacifica for your people. We can't reveal anything just yet, but stay tuned! ; )

- Tourist destinations open in the Atlantic. The number one destination for Commission Seamen looking for a last-hurrah before heading out.
- A Nuclear Program opens up in Cattonia's RnD. Prospecting in Central Cattonia leads to the discovery and post-haste excavation of a large soft ore uranium deposit.
- The Mechanical Computer is a thing now.
- Cattonian Pharmacists delve into advanced medicines, hoping to treat several otherwise incurable illnesses that have sprung since the apocalypse.

- Bombings begin to come to a close, as Sagarmatha's small volunteer Air Force comes into contact with the recently established, but more advanced, Indian Air Force, flying loops about dirigibles of Sagarmatha.
- A push begins for the absolute ban of Capitalism, and involves many burnings of Banks and Businesses, even monks not outright condemning the act. In retaliation, Indian forces begin burning and bombing public and residential areas. It doesn't take long for New Bangladesh to turn into a charred ruin. Sagarmathan refugees and Guerrillas spread throughout the region, while Indian Forces follow closely, intent on catching the mice in the open.
- The largest sum of death Sagarmatha has ever seen leads to many volunteer doctors and medicine men coming together to improve their work, and in the act drive down casualties.
- A growth occurs in the "Working Class", as more Sagarmathans come to build the nation up, literally in the form of a transcontinental railroad with Otak and Syserror, and figuratively with facilities set aside for constructing Monoplanes.

- Telecommunication becomes a federal responsibility, with phone lines laid across the isles.
- Hydro-power becomes a possibility, as studies reveal many stead pacific currents that could be utilized.

- A program put into play by the Government begins to see an evening of the Farming and Working classes, as the poorest and smallest of farms are seized and sold to larger farming businesses, while out-of-work farmers are given space into the growing number of Factories and Mines dotting Otak.
- A large rail system is put into construction, expanding into and through Sagarmatha, as part of an international effort to connect.
- Wizardry is legalized. Otak's lacking Wizards or any fair amount of wizard-like knowledge results mainly in the federal employing of local witch-doctors, oracles, and shamans, who go about figuring out what is wizardry and what is bullshit.
- Education for those below Adult Age is mandated. A lack of federal guidelines results in various focuses and qualities among regions, though higher literacy and mathematics are universally rising in the population with in a few months. It is worth noting that many cannot work having to attend their schools, and those who do are much less effective with so little rest.
- All forms of engineering, magia, and sciences are granted funding. The limited budget gives little to all, and has no ulterior result.
- Outsourcing of storage and desk jobs becomes a common practice in Otak with several such businesses establishing offices in Pacifica. Attempts to do so in Sagarmatha fail, due to recent Policies regarding capitalism and money, as well simple cultural differences regarding work and career.

- Support is offered to the Commission in their war efforts. The Commission responds that the offer may be accepted come spring.
- Singsong is informed that no hostilities are planned with the Sovereigns, but that they will soon be contacted. The Embassy inquires as to how Syserror plans to deal with the SNL invasion that is certain to come.
- Syserror constructs a multi-stage rocket, and is the first Nation to put a satellite into orbit, though it is effectively a fancy radio. “hey singsong, are we on your level yet?” plays on repeat for two hours before suddenly going out of contact, then resumes function, but playing music of an entirely foreign genre.
- Syserror RnD is severely scolded for their not knowing technology decades ahead of them. before striking for the season, they make several studies into Binary math and experiments with Semiconductive materials.
- The vacuum tube, as well as large amounts of silicon and gold are imported. Who knows why.
- Lack of progress in RnD inspires a large amount of grants to be given to Universities. Degrees are expected to rise soon, and Underwater Basket Weaving becomes the number 1 job in demand.
- A rail system is put into place, connecting Sagarmatha, Syserror, and Otak in one contiguous rail.
- The Rugby Games continue with a match against Königsberg. Unfortunately, playing against Sino must have made the team worse, as the game is lost 14-12. Tears were shed that day, and hot dogs were sold.

Burning capitalists? Bully.

It doesn't go through Aeriya, it crosses a pass in the Tibetan mountains straight into Syserror.
Also no one nation has control over the Line, each nation is responsible for the piece in their territory.

Dear Nations of the World,

Sick of the same everyday diplomacy/proxy wars with your neighbor? Want to get away for a while? Why not come to the 1st Official Königsberg Rugby Tournament! (Winter 2156-57. Königsberg Authorities apologize for any lost luggage/nuclear secrets during the tournament.)

Thanks for the invite, but Sagarmathans aren't really into sports. Maybe we should be?

@thread:

Poo. I'm having another turn that I just don't know what to do about. In the words of Alanis Morissette "Thank you, India."

@Serious business

More like all of them.

Rugby is…ahem…Serious Business…in the pacific.

Syserror can't wait to play ANZAC. Assuming of course that ANZACs top priority during the apocalypse would have been preserving their Rugby traditions above everything else. They should know the game

If ANZAC doesn't play Rugby then the GM got something wrong

Global News:

- An international Rugby Cup is held in Berlin, with a great number of nations attending. Days of festivities and advertising are held, and it is agreed that people should totally do this every couple years with more events:

1st: La Plata "Gauchos"
2nd: CBR "Bad Apples"
3rd: Königsberg "Donnerschläge"
4th: North African Union "Rapids"
5th: Pacificia "Bolas"

- The majority of the available Imperial Army is put to work ousting the Commission from the continent, alongside Lenin troops. Without support form Europe, the enemy is being whittled down bit by bit.
- Large-scale War-time economy is set in the Empire, and all forms of major industrial production go towards war material and goods.
- The Nuclear Program is on the verge of a discovery.
- Large amounts of the budget are spent on the educational system of The Empire, in particular giving grants to schools with large Scientific and Mathematical programs, and scholarships to those who participate in said programs. Outlook for graduates in science and engineering in coming years nearly doubles.
- A quarantine is established on those afflicted by Lenin bioweapons. Most in this care die from a lack large-scale medical aid.
