I thought it was funny, and at least slightly indicative of whether or not they're paying attention to the fanbase.

So I just watched the third episode, and there sure was a lot of story development going on. This series is definitely faster-paced than The Last Airbender. I think the setting might contribute to this; whereas Aang, Katara and the gang were on an adventure, Korra is stuck in the city, and creating stories based on a single setting is a far different challenge.

Also, Mako's orphan story totally had me thinking of Batman. How awesome would that be?

I feel like they're kind of railroading the plot. The Last Airbender had a lot of heavy character development, even in the early days. With Korra, it feels like they're taking a "no filler" approach. It has its merits, but I'd like to get to know these characters, like I did with Aang, Sokka and Katara.

If I'm correct in my sources, the fifth episode is supposed to be packed with plot development.

Also, for the sake of not being the only one who can't unsee this, my roommate compared the final scene of the fourth episode to a scene an aborted rape.

Should this be changed to Korra general?

Why do I have such a thing for athletic girls with dominant personalities? I'm so predictable.

I don't think so, she is a huge pro-bending fan and that has been known for a while now. Before the show premiered actually. I doubt she would have anything to do with the equalist. Also, her father is very rich and I think most equalist a lower class citizens. Amons family were poor farmers, people being extorted by the gangs. People who feel that their poverty and low statues is because of the benders. I don't see the super rich demanding equality. I'm pretty sure she is clean.

It's always the good looking ones that end up evil.

But why do they exist in the show then? One of the biggest complaints that I have seen about it is that it goes too fast. There is no time to settle, no slowing down – none of the kind of narrative fat (subplots, filler stories, useless romantic interests) that artificially lengthen the story. That is, of course, except the new sub-plot – which has no obvious connection to the larger story. Mike and Bryan are too good at what they do to let something as obviously out of place as this slip into the script. This girl and her father clearly mean something to the overall plot (probably something significant), but we just haven't been told what it is yet. Sure, they could just be an easy way to resolve the entry fee sub-plot, but they could just as easily have never written that plot at all, or just have had the bodyguard job from the last episode pay well enough upfront.

As for their exact function, I have a couple of ideas. The tournament is not simply there in the background, it is probably going to further the plot in some major way (a sport dedicated solely to letting benders show off their skills is just too much for the equalists to pass up. Also, why would it be in the plot at all except to move the rebellion arc forward?) and the father's sponsorship has gotten him involved with it. Also consider the way in which he made his fortune – car manufacturing, a mechanical empowerment to non-benders. Also remember that he was a self-made man, save for that one all-important loan that he talked about in the last episode. My bet is that, if not overtly evil, he is still connected in some way to the equalists through the loan and/or his larger business interests and, while he might not actually agree with them, he is still aiding their cause. He might just be giving them money, or he might be creating mechanical tools or tanks for them. Perhaps (and this is just fancy) he is funding/building a device to enlarge the range of the bending-theft spell. Remember that the spell can only be cast by one person, and it requires very close physical contact – meaning that it is not practical as a tool of war. The spell needs some form of amplification if it is going to be applied in any way broader than it has been so far, and building something like that would probably be expensive. With almost all of the important spots in business and government being occupied by benders, there is really only one place that they can go for help. Also, if such a device exists, it has probably been nearly completed – as there is no way he would have revealed his power without knowing that the opportunity to use it to its fullest extent was approaching.

Anyway, my point in the earlier post was that after all of this unravels the dating situation will have almost certainly shifted in Korra's favour.

Or mabye they are there so we don't demonize non benders as a whole. At this moment, we have no reason to believe them to be bad other than the fact that they are non-benders. About the Satomobile, who have we seen using the most extravagant ones? Benders, especially the gangs. We also see Korra strike force using a vehicle. He made the Satomobile for everyone, not just non benders. Also, remember that we saw Mako making lighting to help power the city? I'm sure and industrialist would understand the need for cheap and easy power that could power his factories.
I'm sure they are going to be very important to the plot, but they don't have to be affiliated with the equalist to be significant non-benders.

Yeah, funny thing, I actually figured out why they're railroading everything:

Wrong. There are 12 episodes this season, only 6 of them have been announced. There may be a break between the episodes, like with Walking Dead, but it's not the end of the season.

Why must they do this? I was enjoying it so much!

So I've finally caught up with the last two episodes:

So in episode four there was a flashback scene in the last scene. Here's a few screens from there (sorry about the watermark) -

^ I'm pretty sure this is an adult Aang but I might be mixing him up with a younger Tenzin. However, considering the other old cast are adults I'd say it's Aang. Is that the Earth King in the background of the first image?

^ Adult Toph who is possibly with her Metal-bending police force or perhaps at the Metal-bending academy.

^ Adult Sokka sporting a kick-ass goatee and looking very much like his father.

^ Not sure who this but he doesn't seem like good news. A wild guess would be Fire lord Ozai but I doubt it.

This show makes up so much for that horrible movie(but not all the way).

I remember Councilman Tarrlok mentioning something to Tenzin about a villan Aang faced (I think his name started with a Y) that threatened Republic City. That could be who the person in the last panel is. Hopefully we'll get some sweet flashback episodes soon that will give us some more detail.

I'm guessing Toph is with the police in that image. Her uniform looks a lot like her daughter's.
