Keep this meme stock exchange!

This is the greatest thing to happen to this site since I don't know when. It may have been intended as an April Fools' joke, but I genuinely enjoy it. I could see a great number of things to add/improve about it such as:

  • Ability to buy/sell more than one share at a time. (easier on the servers too)
  • Improvements to the portfolio to show what you bought the shares at as well as % change.
  • Cosmetic profile doohickeys to buy with KYMcoins (badges, titles, etc)
  • Occasional "events" that alter the value of a certain meme's stock. (Probably for older, mostly dead memes. Just to keep things still relevant fair.)
  • A scoreboard to keep track of the most successful meme moguls.
  • The ability to trade shares with other users. ("I'll give you 3 shares in Jojo for a dozen Dat Boi.")
  • A potential partnership with r/MemeEconomy?

Important details to buff with this program if used in the long-term:

-If you buy a stock at 2 or more in value exactly once and immediately sell it and buy it again over and over, you can do this infinitely over and over as a cookie-clicker form of gaining wealth 1 coin at a time.

-People should have a way to go back up to a decent starting amount if they get unlucky and hit rock bottom. Make it so users can go back to 100 wealth once per month on the off-chance they get unlucky or even just want to start over.

-This can be easily exploited through having a large swathe of accounts go to an entry at once just to make it trend and then sell at a really good price.

-Make it so you can buy cool stupid stuff with enough points. 200 buys you a badge. 300 buys a hat for your avatar. 1000 buys you a date with KYM-Tan. Etc.

-Make the numbers and icon less intrusive on the profiles.

-Make this a feature that is hidden by default so this site is foremost a wiki site as it is intended to be and second a fun fake stock exchange for users.

-Block entries that are deadpooled from being featured on the stock exchange.

Side note:

Creating a widget that tracks this new fake meme market which can be embeded in other sites would be a good idea for advertising the website. Just put the line graph that already exists for tracking the meme market into an embed with slightly tweaked settings.

Congratulations to whatever team of coders came up with this idea.

I gotta say, I love it too. I really enjoyed this whole thing.

A suggestion if this does stay after today:
Having an option to have it enabled to disabled so you don't have to see it if you don't want to and can only see it if you are logged in. Mainly because I do not know if everyone wants to see it all the time and prefer to view the site like it was previously. But something they can go back to (simply by re-enabling this feature) if they want to. I guess a check box somewhere in account settings could suffice.

My suggestions from most helpful to least:

Methods to gain KYM coins through site contribution would also benefit KYM: hell, seeing the enthusiasm for this, editorship might go up. However, it should have a daily cap and karma guard so it doesn't get botted.

Stock value should be a good indicator of how trending a meme is on KYM, and hopefully globally.

I wouldn't mind the meme economy operating on seasons either.

Rig the advertising to advertise economists so the site runs faster and profits better(lol)

Invite r/memeeconomy.

I don't care if it sticks around (although I haven't been participating), but don't clog up the top of entries with the UI thing about it. Either create a separate "stock exchange" page or stick it at the bottom of entries.

Yeah, I agree with this. It should be unintrusive for the normies.

I can't say how much fun this will be on the long run. It was fun like this for a day, but how many will shrug after a week?

Fun in moderation and all that.

A day wasn't nearly enough to play it, really. I figured out how the stock market works decently like, 4 hours before it closed. Lots of other people didn't figure it out at all, and didn't have much time to play. We also had messiness (spending time looking for alts, exploits in the system, ambiguity regarding rules).

It was fun as heck, but one day wasn't nearly enough.

The system as-is, of course, wouldn't stay if it did stay. We don't want that big block at the top of every entry eternally. But some other version, a more discreet and fine-tuned one, could very well work.

The frenzy that happened yesterday, of course, couldn't be sustained. People couldn't go all day every day looking for entries going up and down. But I would definitely love to try to keep stocks in entries that gain value over time and rack up my coin count, and I'm sure others would too.

If there's a way to keep it fun and lasting (and less intrusive), I'm supporting it with my all of course. Who knows, it might just promote entry creation, since the creator can take first spot in memebuck investments.

I'd love to see this as a permanent addition to the site, it's quite fun.

As for the issue of it being intrusive, perhaps the buy/sell buttons for each entry could be relocated to the price history page, which could then be accessed through a link in the sidebar, similar to where the Suggest a Change and Edit History buttons are?

There is also the issue of people bulk buying to drive prices up. If this is a problem, then maybe a buy limit of X amount every Y hours could be imposed (e.g. Limit of 20 bought every 4 hours for each entry). We had a timer on selling stocks after buying them. Just an idea I had, don't know how difficult it would be to implement that though, or if people would want it.

But wild price fluctuations are part of the fun! I say, keep the share purchase and sales mechanism as it was.
