Overview

Kamala Harris 2024 refers to online support for Vice President Kamala Harris for contesting in the 2024 United States Presidential Election. After support for President Joe Biden faltered after the first debate between him and Donald Trump in late June 2024 and the Supreme Court decision to bolster immunity for presidents, progressives skeptical of Biden's capacity to contest the upcoming election began sharing memes and jokes in support of a possible Kamala for President campaign. KHive activity, both ironic and sincere, began to rise on X / Twitter in early July 2024. On July 21st, Joe Biden announced that he is stepping down from the 2024 Elections and lent his support to Kamala Harris in her presidential campaign.

Background

Democrat voters began expressing apprehension about President Joe Biden's capacity to contest in the 2024 Presidential Election after the first debate between him and Trump on June 27th, 2024. X[1] user @stevienicks420 posted a joke about Vice President Kamala Harris being happy about the possibility of becoming the president in the event of Biden's death using a clip from Veep, gathering over 90,000 likes in a week (seen below).

The idea that a vote for Joe Biden could entail the possibility of Harris becoming President was echoed by Donald Trump Jr. in a June 27th post on X[2] that gathered over 12,000 likes in a week (seen below).

Developments

On June 30th, 2024, news about Kamala objecting to candidates like Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom being considered to replace Biden began making the rounds online, with a Reddit post about the rumors on /r/politics[5] gathering over 10,000 upvotes in three days.

On July 1st, the Supreme Court made a ruling that bolstered immunity for presidents in the country. This caused worry among Democrats who feared that such a decision could allow a future president to misuse their powers. The decision also spawned a wave of memes surrounding Harris and her potential to become president.

On July 3rd, 2024, Kamala Harris issued a statement about the possibility of her running for the Presidency in 2024, saying that she is placing her support behind the Biden campaign (seen below, right).[6]

Harris Secures Democrat Nomination

On July 21st, 2024, Biden officially announced that he was stepping down from the 2024 presidential election and that he now supports Harris in her campaign for the presidency. The following week, Harris continued to secure the support of key Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and the Obamas.

Joe Biden @JoeBiden My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it's been the best decision I've made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats - it's time to come together and beat Trump. Let's do this. Project Coconut

Project Coconut is a codename or nickname for the presidential campaign of Vice President and potential Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. The term was widely used by supporters of Harris in the days following Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race and her entry into the 2024 United States Presidential Election. "Coconut" in the name refers to Kamala Harris' viral You Think You Just Fell Out Of A Coconut Tree catchphrase, while "Project" may reference Project 2025, a plan created by Republican officials and operatives for a second Trump administration. In late July 2024, posts and memes using "Project Coconut" in reference to her campaign and the possibility of a Harris administration notably increased on various social media platforms as support for her grew.

Coconut-Pilled

Coconut-Pilled sometimes spelled Coconutpilled or Coconut Pilled, is an internet slang term used primarily by progressives and former Kamala Harris critics who express semi-ironic support of the vice president replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for president in the 2024 Election. The term is inspired by Harris' infamous "Fell out Of a Coconut Tree" quote, signaling that those who are "coconut-pilled" are embracing Harris' bizarre tics and weirdness.

Kamala Is Brat

Kamala Is Brat refers to a series of memes that paint presumptive presidential candidate Kamala Harris as "brat" in the context of Charlie XCX's 2024 album brat and its related memes like "Brat Summer," with the slang term being used in a positive and praising manner. Started by TikTok edits that applied brat aesthetic (such as the album cover's lime-green color) to videos of Harris, the meme received further development after Charlie XCX wrote "kamala IS brat" on social media in late July 2024.
