About
Project Coconut is a codename or nickname for the presidential campaign of Vice President and potential Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. The term was widely used by supporters of Harris in the days following Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race and her entry into the 2024 United States Presidential Election. "Coconut" in the name refers to Kamala Harris' viral You Think You Just Fell Out Of A Coconut Tree catchphrase, while "Project" may reference Project 2025, a plan created by Republican officials and operatives for a second Trump administration. In late July 2024, posts and memes using "Project Coconut" in reference to her campaign and the possibility of a Harris administration notably increased on various social media platforms as support for her grew.
Origin
On July 21st, 2024, President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris. Five minutes after Biden's letter dropping out of the race was posted to Twitter / X, user @ali_sivi posted that "project coconut is a go" (seen below), receiving over 92,000 likes and 11,000 reposts in the course of two days.[1]
Spread
Enthusiasm for the Harris campaign among her supporters built over the weekend in late July 2024, leading to a series of memes and symbols such as the use of Coconut and Palm Tree Emojis, Charli XCX's declaration that "Kamala IS brat" and many TikTok edits and remixes of her coconut tree quote.
In the comments of many Harris-themed meme videos or fancams during this timeframe, numerous users repeated the phrase "PROJECT COCONUT" or some variation of it as it spread. For example, on a July 22nd, 2024, post from the official campaign TikTok account @kamalahq, which called for a "feminomenon," users commented with the phrase "Project Coconut" several times (seen below), earning tens of thousands of likes in a day.[2]
Elsewhere on TikTok, many users posted videos celebrating Project Coconut. For example, on July 22nd, TikToker @sweetcyns posted a dance set to Charli XCX's 'Apple' dubbed to an audio of the "Coconut Tree" speech (seen below, left) earning over 1,600 likes and 168,000 views in the course of a day.[3]
