About

America Ya (Hallo Hallo Hallo) or Osaka In America refers to a viral spam comment and catchphrase based on the Azumanga Daioh scene in which character Ayumu Kasuga imagines herself going to the United States and seeing every American as tiny version of her friend Chiyo Mihama. The scene resurfaced as a viral sound on TikTok in Mach 2024, sparking users to comment "America Ya" followed by several "Hallo's" (Hello) in a video's comment section.

Origin

On August 19th, 2002, the 20th episode of the Azumanga Daioh aired in Japan.[1] In a particular scene in the episode, the character Ayumu Kasuga imagines herself just landing in the United States and seeing every American as a tiny version of her friend Chiyo Mihama saying repeatedly "Hello, hello, hello." The earliest found video of the scene was uploaded on March 30th, 2021, on YouTube[2] by user @azumanga7235, who posted an English dub version (shown below, left), amassing more than 70,000 views and 4,100 likes in three years.

On December 29th, 2022, YouTube[3] user @osacrafCurifea posted a video of the scene with the original Japanese dub in which Ayumu says "America Ya" and tiny versions of Chiyo greeting her with "Hallo, hallo, hallo." The post (shown below, right) garnered more than 12,000 views and 605 likes in almost two years.

On February 3rd, 2024, TikTok[4] user @rotkraut34100 posted a video showing the "America ya" scene in the Azumanga Daioh manga version, to which user @_qqxon_ commented "America Ya :D" on February 5th and was followed by several users commenting "hallo!" below his comment. The post (shown below) amassed more than 15,200 likes in a month.

The spam comments using the anime quote started to go viral in mid-March 2024, as user @morinmorin94[5] posted a video (shown below, left) on March 23rd, 2024, recording a comment section with several users repeating "America ya" and "Hallo" in the comments. The post garnered more than 1.7 million plays and 399,000 likes in four days. On March 26th, 2024, TikTok[6] user @voicemod posted a similar compilation video (shown below, right) with several screenshots of people commenting the Azumanga Daioh spam quote. The post amassed over 1.5 million plays and 246,000 likes in a day.
